Meet concludes indoor regular season
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall track and field wrapped up the indoor regular season portion of its schedule Saturday in the Marshall Invitational at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Athletic Complex.
As the final home meet of the season, the 10 seniors of the track and field and cross country program were honored: Hannah Carreon, Hunter Deem, Christianna Dogan, Daniel Green, Audreana Lewis, Alex Minor, Safiyyah Mitchell, Stephanie Rogner, Denisha West, and Danere'a White.
As a team, the Thundering Herd finished 2nd with a point total of 138.50 behind Murray State's impressive 174 point accumulation. Marshall athletes earned three event wins Saturday, two of which were by seniors.
"We worked on the things we needed to and we competed really well," assistant coach and meet director Caleb Bowen said. "That's the thing I think we take away from this meet, we competed well. If we can roll from that and get a little better leading up to Conferences, we're excited for it. Give props to Murray State for bringing it, tip of our hats to them.
This class of seniors has been great, they've been leaders since they've arrived on campus. We've had athletes who have been contributors from the beginning, and they all have improved and stuck it out."
Safiyyah Mitchell for the sixth time this season won the 60 meter hurdles finals. She has won the event every meet this season for the Thundering Herd, with her winning time Saturday being 8.47.
Senior Denisha West for the third time this season won the triple jump, and for the eighth time in her career took first place. Her winning jump was 11.83 meters (38 feet 9.75 inches).
In the 400 meter dash, freshman Mikah Alleyne ran the second-fastest time in school history, winning the event with a time of 55.74. Behind Elisabeth Paulina's 2016 time of 55.34, she became just the second Marshall sprinter ever to break 56 seconds in the event.
Senior Christianna Dogan's time of 56.24 is the fourth-fastest personal record in the 400 meter dash.
Freshman Abby Herring finished third in the mile with a time of 5:05.21. That new personal record became the third-fastest indoor mile PR in school history.
