Track and Field Competes in C-USA Indoor Championships

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall track and field sends 21 athletes to the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday and Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama. The meet begins Saturday at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The Thundering Herd has finished 8th out of 13 schools in each of the past two seasons at the Conference USA Indoor Championships. Last year, Marshall set a new school record for team points at the meet (43).

A season ago, three members of the team earned All-C-USA honors for a top-three finish in their respective event (Reneese Batson, Weight Throw; Safiyyah Mitchell, 60 meter hurdles; Lauren Zaglifa, pole vault).

Mitchell has finished runner-up in the 60 meter hurdles each of the past three seasons. She and her teammates aim to win an event and become the first Marshall athlete to win an event at the Indoor Championships since Kristen Smith won the pentathlon in 2009.

Marshall has 14 individuals or relays which enter the meet ranked within the top-10 of their respective events based on season-best times or marks.

Mitchell enters with the 2nd-best time in the 60m hurdles (8.40), the 4x400 meter relay team at the Flames Invitational ran the 2nd-best regular season time in the conference at 3:46.22, and MaryAnn Adebayo has the 3rd-best throw in the weight throw, a personal record she set at the Marshall Invitational two weeks ago (18.29 meters/60 feet 0.25 inches).

Redshirt junior Torie Derrow is set to be the first Thundering Herd athlete to compete Saturday at 10:15 ET in the pentathlon. A full list of Marshall athletes scheduled to compete and their times are listed below.
