Coach Waggoner Post-Game
ATHENS, Ohio—Marshall baseball (5-10-1) defeated Ohio (3-12), 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium.
The win is the seventh straight for Marshall in the head-to-head series. The Thundering Herd has also won five straight games against the Bobcats in Athens.
"We're playing really good team baseball right now, and we have to," head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "I thought our pitching has really stepped up the past few games and guys are aggressive and are coming out attacking the zone. We're playing better defensive baseball and we're putting good swings on with runners in scoring position.
We've got to keep it on a roll. Now we're playing championship baseball and against a really good team in Rice. We leave tomorrow morning for Houston and we've got to be ready to go. If we keep playing good team baseball we're going to be okay."
The Herd scored first, as junior Geordon Blanton led off with a single and then stole second and third base. He scored on an RBI single from Luke Edwards.
Blanton scored his second run of the game when following his third inning double, Peter Hutzal's RBI single brought him in to extend the Marshall lead, 2-0.
The Bobcats battled back with one run in the fourth and then tied the game in the fifth inning on a squeeze bunt.
The game remained tied until the eighth inning when the duo of Blanton and Hutzal delivered again. Blanton reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Hutzal made the Bobcats pay as his RBI single through the right side scored Blanton for the third time Wednesday and would prove to be the game-winning run.
Blanton, Hutzal and senior Zach Inskeep each went 2-for-4. Blanton's three runs were a season-high.
Sophomore starting pitcher Ryan Capuano received no decision in the start. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out a career-high six batters.
Redshirt junior Robert Kwiatkowski pitched 1.0 hitless inning, allowing no runs. Over his past four appearances and 8.0 innings, he has allowed no hits or runs, and has struck out 11 batters compared to no walks.
Garrett Priestly, Trey Alderman, D'Andre Knight and Michael Guerrero combined for 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on three hits, striking out six batters.
Alderman (1-0) earned the win on the mound with his 1.1 innings of relief, striking out two and allowing one hit. Guerrero earned his third save of the season, pitching a shut-down ninth inning.
The Marshall pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts and no walks.
Marshall returns to action this weekend to begin Conference USA play at Rice. First pitch in the three-game series is set for Friday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT in Houston.
