HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team dropped a five-set match (25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 11-15) to the Old Dominion Monarchs, Friday night in the Cam Henderson Center.

The two teams meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Cam. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Thundering Herd is now 7-13 overall and 3-4 in Conference USA play. The Monarchs improve to 11-8 overall and 3-2 in league action.

On offense, graduate student Ciara DeBell and senior Macy McElhaney both finished with 14 kills. DeBell tallied her ninth double-double of the year as she had 15 digs. The Ocala, Fla., native also surpassed 1,400 kills in her collegiate career with the milestone coming in the second set. She now has 1,411 in her career and 1,325 in her time with Marshall. She is fourth all-time. DeBell was also the target for the Monarchs most of the night on serves as she finished with just two reception errors on 55 total attempts, good for a .965 percentage. DeBell did also record three aces of her own.

McElhaney was close to her second career double-double, coming up just short as she tallied nine digs. Juniors Lydia Montague and Essence Clerkley both finished in double-digits in kills. Montague recorded 13 and Clerkley put up a career-best 10. Sophomore Anna Calcagno had nine kills.

Graduate student Sydney Lostumo finished the night with 54 assists, averaging almost 11 per set. Lostumo now has 1,720 assists in her Marshall career (2,112 collegiate career), and is ninth all-time. She needs another 58 to move ahead of Madelyn Cole (2016-17) for eighth place. Lostumo did tally her ninth double-double of the year as she added 14 digs. She also finished with three kills on six attempts.

Senior libero Sarah Schank recorded 18 digs to lead the Herd. She has 382 digs for the year and 1,084 in her career. Along with leading the team in digs, Schank also put up a career-best six service aces. Her previous career-high was four against FIU this past season. Schank's performance is also tied for the fourth-highest total in a single match in team history. The libero was also 23-for-23 on receptions.

Junior Meagan Camden finished the night with two digs, one ace and one assist.

At the net, Marshall tallied nine total team blocks. Clerkley led the way again with six as she had two solo blocks and four block assists. McElhaney was right behind with five. Montague finished with two while DeBell and Calcagno had one each.

The match was a back-and-forth battle all night long with 24 ties and 12 lead changes.

The first set featured six ties and four lead changes as the teams began the five-set battle. Marshall tallied the first point on a kill from Montague, however Old Dominion scored four-straight to take a three-point lead. Then the Herd went on an 7-0 run, bolstered by four-straight aces from Schank, as well as two kills from Calcagno and a combined block from Clerkley and McElhaney. The Monarchs fought back and tied the set at 10-10. The two teams traded points back-and-forth and kept it close until a kill from DeBell gave Marshall a three-point advantage, 18-15. After and Old Dominion timeout, Montague put the Herd up by four with her second of three kills in the set. Clerkley ended the set with her second kill of the frame and gave Marshall a 25-20 win, and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set number two had five ties and two lead changes. Marshall led early until the Monarchs caught fire offensively. Old Dominion stretched its lead out to six at 21-15, before the Herd started to battle back. Marshall was able to close within two points at 22-20 on a kill from McElhaney, at 23-21 on a kill from Clerkley and again at 24-22 on another kill from Clerkley. An ace from Camden cut the deficit to one, but Marshall could not keep the momentum going as the Monarchs finally scored the 25th point, and tied the match at 1-1. McElhaney had five kills and Calcagno had four in the set. Lostumo had 14 assists and five digs in the second as well.

The third set had four ties and three lead changes as the teams attempted to take charge in the contest. Old Dominion led by as much as three early on until the Herd tied it up at 10-10 and then took the lead off a block from Clerkley and McElhaney. Marshall held the advantage until the Monarchs regained the lead at 18-17. The Herd stepped back out in front at 21-20 on a kill from Calcagno. After an Old Dominion timeout, Marshall made it a three-point lead after an ace from DeBell and a Monarch attack error. The Herd led by one at set-point and then Montague finished it with her second kill of the period. Clerkley tallied two kills and three blocks in the third set. Debell had five kills in the third to go along with the ace and two digs. Marshall now led 2-1.

There were eight ties and three lead changes in the fourth as the Monarchs kept fighting. The set remained close until Old Dominion used a 5-0 run to go up 20-13. However, the Herd did not quit, responding with a 5-0 run as well to close the deficit back to two, 20-18. The Monarchs managed to stay out in front as Marshall even closed to within one at 24-23 on a block from Clerkley and McElhaney. Old Dominion then ended the set and tied the match back up at 2-2.

Unfortunately, the Herd could not carry the momentum of the comeback attempt into the fifth set. The score was tied just once at 1-1 before the Monarchs jumped back in front for good to take the set and the match.
