Women’s Soccer Falls in Double OT Loss at FAU

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Marshall University women's soccer team (3-9-2, 0-5-1 C-USA) suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 double-overtime defeat in Boca Raton, Fla., to the Florida Atlantic Owls (5-5-4, 3-1-2 C-USA) on Friday night.

"I just told the players it's gonna get a lot easier from here if we put in performances like we did tonight," women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the game. "This one really hurts because our commitment, desire and effort was second to none tonight. I couldn't be prouder of our group and feel really good about the future of this young team."

Both offenses were slow to start as freshman defender/midfielder Ava Hall fired the first shot of the game in the 10th minute, but it was saved by FAU goalkeeper Amit Cohen.

At the 15:54 mark, the Owls drew a foul in the box and Bri Austin stepped to the spot for a penalty kick. Austin placed it in the bottom left corner for a goal to put MU down 1-0.

Freshman goalkeeper Mira Pastoft made a big save in the 44th minute to keep the deficit at one as Marshall trailed 1-0 at halftime.

"We had a great reaction in the second half and created the opportunities to put us in front," Swan commented. "We just couldn't hang on in regulation. In overtime, we had composure and created our chances to win it, but we got hit with a sucker punch."

The Herd didn't wait long into the second half to get on the board as junior forward Morgan White buried her second goal of the season on a pass from freshman midfielder Courtney Corcoran just over a minute into the second frame to tie the game at 1-1 in the 47th minute.

Pastoft came up with her second save of the contest one minute later and followed with saves in the 52nd and 55th minutes to keep the match tied.

In the 61st minute, MU drew a penalty kick and senior forward Kat Gonzalez went to take the attempt. Gonzalez fired the ball into the top left corner of the goal to give the Herd a 2-1 lead. It was the senior's fourth goal of the season and she is three-for-three on penalty kicks.

Pastoft preserved Marshall's lead with saves in the 69th and 86th minutes.

With 34 seconds to go, MU blocked a FAU shot, but nine ticks later the Owls tied the match with a goal by Miracle Porter to send it to overtime with the scored tied 2-2.

Sophomore midfielder Abi Hugh had the lone shot in the first extra period, but the attempt was saved by Cohen as the two sides went to a second overtime.

Just over four minutes into the second overtime period, FAU's Mia Sennes scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Austin as the Herd fell 3-2.
