Gonzalez fires game-high four shots
Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University women's soccer team (3-10-2, 0-6-1 C-USA) dropped its final home contest of the 2021 season 2-0 to the Charlotte 49ers (7-5-2, 3-2-2 C-USA) on Friday night at Hoops Family Field.
"All in all this season, it's a young team that's growing," women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the match. "We didn't use a lot of players tonight, but that's a testament to the players who were on the field. They were superb. We conceded early on our mistake. We conceded midway through the second half on our mistake on a corner, but we created so many good opportunities. We just haven't had the rub of the green this season. I think that showed tonight with us not converting our chances at times."
The game started slow between the two sides before sophomore forward Morgan White was in on goal, but fired an attempt high at the 8:02 mark.
The 49ers took the lead in the 11th minute of play as Haley Shand took a pass from Braelynn Francher and found the back of the net as the Herd trailed 1-0.
Sophomore defender Abi Hugh tried to knot the match up as her attempt went wide left in the 15th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Mira Pastoft rebounded and made a pair of saves at 30:27 and 34:28 to keep the deficit at one.
Senior midfielder Kat Gonzalez had the final attempt of the half as her shot off a free kick was saved by CLT keeper Abby Stapleton in the 38th minute as the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
After Pastoft made a pair of saves in the first four minutes of the second half, Gonzalez cut inside and blasted a shot just over the crossbar in the 51st to nearly tie the game.
"Kat is on a different level and has been on a different level for the last six weeks for us. Same as Morgan (White)," Swan commented on the performances of Gonzalez and White. "She (Morgan) is stepping up and Kat is a senior player. Some of the touches and things Kat does in the game is on a different level above at times."
From 55:01 to 61:23, Marshall had four shots, with two by Gonzalez, an attempt by freshman Meg Jarvis and a shot on goal by freshman midfielder Courtney Corcoran, but all were saved or off target.
39 seconds after Pastoft made a save, Michaella Arteta scored Charlotte's second goal of the game off a Piper Biziorek corner kick in the 68th minute as MU trailed 2-0.
Hugh and freshman defender Olivia Delikat each had shots off target down the stretch as score line remained 2-0 at the end of the contest.
"We've told them to stay the course, stay positive and stay focused on what the future looks like. This is a young team that is 15 games into most of their young careers. It's very freshman and sophomore heavy out there. What we're looking for at Middle Tennessee is another good performance and that's all we can ask for out of them. The wins are going to come if we can keep putting in performances like that, Swann commented.
"I have to give a lot of credit to our back four because they are not defenders. They're midfielders, wide players and attacking players and that's what we've done all year because the majority of our back four are sitting on the bench with season-ending injuries. I'm not making excuses, I'm just proud of how the group has performed and the results aren't showing it. The results aren't reflecting our performance, our endeavor and our growth."
