DeBell Reaches Career Milestone as Volleyball Falls at Charlotte

10/23/2021 5:33:00 PM | Volleyball

DeBell joins 1,000 Kills/1,000 Digs Club

CHARLOTTE – Marshall volleyball graduate student Ciara DeBell reached another incredible career milestone as the Herd fell in three sets (20-25, 19-25, 19-25) to the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday. DeBell recorded her 1,000th career dig and joins an exclusive group with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

The Thundering Herd falls to 8-15 overall and 4-6 in Conference USA. The 49ers improve to 12-8 and 5-3 in league action.

"I am so proud of Ciara and this huge accomplishment today," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "She has worked so hard every single day to reach such an impressive milestone.

"Today wasn't the result we all wanted, but we will continue to stick together and take a lot of time to get ready for FIU at home."

Following Friday's match, DeBell had 993 digs in her collegiate career and reached the 1,000-plateau in the second set on Saturday. Coming into the weekend, only 30 active players across Division I were members of the 1,000 Kills/1,000 Digs Club. DeBell joins that group as she is already well over 1,000 kills (1,457). She finished the match with 11 kills to lead the Herd and nine digs. DeBell is also third all-time in program history in career kills with 1,371 in her Marshall career. She surpassed Alisha Bable (1995-97) in Friday's match.

Only four players in Marshall's history have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in their careers. Bridget Repsher (1991-94) was the first to reach the double-milestone. Bable became the second followed by Stephanie Cahill (2004-07) and Laura Der (2010-13). DeBell has 933 digs during her time with the Green & White.

Sophomore Anna Calcagno finished second with nine kills and had five digs. Graduate student Destiny Leon was next with seven kills and hit at a .500 clip. Redshirt sophomore Olivia Fogo played in the third set and provided another spark off the bench with five kills. Junior Lydia Montague had four kills while Macy McElhaney had three and freshman Brynn Brown added two. McElhaney also had nine digs.

Graduate student Sydney Lostumo finished the day with 34 assists, six digs and one kill. Senior libero Sarah Schank tallied eight digs and one assist. Sophomore Riley Winslow recorded four digs, two assists and one ace.

Marshall totaled six team blocks. Calcagno led the team with three. Leon upped her streak to 61-straight matches with a block, picking up two. DeBell and Montague had two each and junior Essence Clerkley had one.

The first set had three ties and three lead changes, all early in the frame. Charlotte took the lead for good at 4-3. Marshall kept the deficit within four points late in the set, but could not get any closer as the 49ers took the set and the 1-0 lead.

Marshall trailed from beginning to end in the second set. Charlotte had the 2-0 lead and momentum going into the third.

The Herd battled in the third set, not giving up easily as there were six ties in the period. Marshall tied the score at 8-8 on a kill from Montague, however the Herd just could not find its offensive rhythm to keep it flowing as Charlotte took over and led for the remainder of the set.

Marshall gets a little break with an off weekend coming up, and then returns to the court Nov. 5-6 at home against the FIU Panthers. The matches will be final contests of the regular season and will also be Senior Weekend.
