Herring’s Stellar Performance Paces Herd at Cross Country Championships

Women post best-ever finish
CONCORD, N.C. – Abby Herring finished ninth at the 2021 Conference USA Cross Country Championships to pace the Thundering Herd Saturday morning at Frank Liske Park in Concord, N.C.
Herring's finish was the best-ever for Marshall at the C-USA Championships and the best in any conference meet since Michelle Strager's ninth-place finish at the 1993 Southern Conference Championships.
Herring's performance (21:10.3) led the women to a sixth-place team finish (197 points), another top program accomplishment in the history of its competition at the C-USA meet. Kyleigh Edwards finished 40th (22:48.4), followed by Sydney Smith (49th, 23:10), Julia Muller (51st, 23:13.4), Kalei Jordan (55th, 23:22.8), Victoria Dotson (60th, 23:38.2), Madelyn Garrison (64th, 23:48), Meagan Ward (67th, 23:50.9) and Erykah Christopher (73rd, 24:22.5).
The Marshall men also finished sixth, led by Evan White's 32nd-place result (25:27.9). The next Herd runner was Jacob Birurakis (43rd, 26:16), followed by Jackson Snyder (48th, 26:37.9), Branden Wood (50th, 26:41.1), Paul Sepulveda (26:57.8), Brett Armbruster (59th, 27:05.9), Kazuma Bowring (60th, 27:05.9), Kent Bee (75th, 28:03.3) and Wyatt Hanshaw (28:11.9). As a team, Marshall's score was 206.
"It was a great day," said Caleb Bowen, Marshall's Assistant Coach for Cross Country. "The men started off the day strong for the Herd. We were predicted to get eighth and finished sixth. The men raced really well and I think this group is going to be much stronger in the years to come. I loved the way they got after it and, as we improve, we'll be a force to be reckoned with.
"Then the women followed up with a best-ever sixth-place finish! We have such a strong group of women. They went after it from the gun and fought the whole way. It was truly special watching Abby battle it out with some amazing competitors.
"Overall, I'm so proud of both teams. We have a lot of work to do, as sixth place is just a step toward where we want to go. We're very happy with this meet."
Middle Tennessee was the team winner in both meets.
