BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Marshall men's golf team played a great final round of the Mountaineer Invitational on Tuesday at the Pete Dye Golf Club. The Herd moved up five places to finish fifth overall.

The Thundering Herd tied the host West Virginia Mountaineers with the best final round team score with a 13-under, 275. It was a 29-stroke improvement for Marshall from the second to the third round, as the Herd was tied for 10th at the end of the second.

"Today was a great day for us," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "I thought we would play better today but I was pleasantly surprised by their play. This team fights to the very end and today was so much fun to watch as a coach. Noah (Mullens) finished a good week with a strong round today. Tyler (Jones) finished great, making five birdies in his last seven holes. Ryan (Bilby) got off to a hot start and finished off a solid 67. Brett (Montgomery) had seven birdies in a really good round of 71. It was a great experience today and we are looking forward to Dayton in a couple of weeks."

He first scored a 4-over 76 in the first round, then scored a 1-over 73 in the second round to finally finish with a 4-under 68 on Tuesday. Freshman Ryan Bilby also kept improving beginning with a 79 in the first round, then a 76 in the second to end with a 5-under 67. Bilby began the day on the back nine and finished his first nine holes at 1-under. He shot par or better on every hole of the front nine including four birdies. The freshman shot up 23 places on the leaderboard with the nine-stroke improvement and finished tied for 29th.

Junior Tyler Jones dropped his score by eight shots on Tuesday. Jones also began on the back nine and finished the first nine holes at plus-2. The junior then went on a tear through the front nine with five birdies. He started with a birdie on No. 4 and then tallied birdies on Nos. 5-8 to drop his score to a 3-under 69. Jones moved up 13 places on the leaderboard.
