HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Herd women's soccer head coach Michael Swan was hired on Dec. 19, 2019, 431 days ago, and is ready to coach his first game for Marshall on Saturday at East Tennessee State.

"These last couple weeks have been really exciting because we feel like we're getting prepared for something," Swan said as they have prepared for their first game. "The fact that we've had the full team for the last few weeks, it's been a great learning experience for the players. We're rearing to go. It's been a long time coming and we can't wait to get started."

This will be the first match for both teams as they get started this spring as opening kick is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Johnson City, Tenn.

"We don't know a lot about them (ETSU)," Swan said. "It's their first regular season game like us. They're going to be excited to have their home opener like we're excited to get a game in."

MU was just getting into its 2020 spring exhibition schedule so Coach Swan could get a look at the squad in game action. However, it got shut down as quickly as it started due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has presented challenges to himself and the team.

"I think the biggest challenge we've had during the pandemic is you deal with your own challenges and your dealing with the whole squad. It's a lot of people to be communicating with and helping them with their challenges. Seeing whether we are practicing or not practicing, testing or not testing. All of these challenges relate to the well-being of our student-athletes and making sure they are taken care of mentally and physically."

This year's team is very young, featuring 11 freshmen and nine sophomores among the 28 women squad.

"We're going to see things from young players which we haven't had yet in nervous energy before a game," Swan commented. "I talked to Metztli (Gonzalez), our captain and told her you have 40 or 50 games under your belt and they haven't. Lead them in the locker room. Get them calm down. She believes they're going to be ready because they are focused on getting started."

Currently Marshall has 11 games on its schedule as it heads into an unusual 2021 spring regular season.
