Herd Women’s Soccer Takes Opener over ETSU in Overtime

Swan records first win, Hugh scores two goals

Box Score
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Marshall University women's soccer team (1-0) captured its season-opener in Michael Swan's debut leading the Herd, 2-1, at East Tennessee State (0-1) behind two goals from freshman Abi Hugh on Saturday afternoon.

"This was a very fitting start for a young team," Swan said after winning his debut. "We've worked so hard during these past few weeks on mentality and you could see it finally paying off today. They were fantastic."

The first shot of the game came in the eighth minute as freshman Olivia Gandee hit the woodwork and junior Kat Gonzalez sent a shot wide right for Marshall three minutes later.

"We faced a couple of setbacks in the warm up as well as losing a key player in the first 20 minutes," Swan commented. "But we adjusted a few things and had a fantastic performance."

Sophomore Madison Vogler recorded the first shot on target for the Herd, but ETSU's Ashton Blair recorded the save 20 minutes into the contest. Sophomore Herd goalkeeper Courtney McVicker saved two shots in the 26th and 28th minutes, respectively, to keep the contest scoreless.

Marshall senior Metztli Gonzalez had the final scoring attempt of the half, but Blair made another save as the team's headed to the locker room knotted at 0-0.

The Buccaneers came out firing in the second half with two of the first three shots, but Hugh slotted home the first goal of the contest and her career in the 57th minute on an assist from Morgan White to give the Herd a 1-0 advantage.

ETSU didn't wait long to equalize as Anjela Kricak tied the game 1-1 in the 59th minute.

Hugh put another shot on goal in the 69th minute that was saved, and Kat Gonzalez followed up Hugh's attempt, but sent the ball wide.

McVicker rallied after giving up the goal with saves in the 66th, 78th, and 86th minutes to keep the game squared at 1-1.

Sophomore Iselin Noevik nearly gave the Herd the victory in regulation, but Blair made the save in the 89th minute to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, ETSU's Raffaella Giuliano put a shot on target, but McVicker stepped up and made the save in the 99th minute.

"It's hard to single out a player when you get a team-win like that, but you have to give credit to Abi (Hugh) for getting into dangerous areas and making two great finishes," Swan said about Hugh's performance.

One minute later, after Kat Gonzalez's fifth shot of the match, Hugh slotted home the game winner just over nine minutes into overtime for the Herd victory.

"It's an unbelievable feeling to get the win and I couldn't be happier for our program and I'm excited for us to get back on the field next week."
