Series History: 16 all-time meetings – Marshall leads 11-5
Last Meeting: Nov. 9, 2019 in Huntington – Marshall won 3-0
Last Time Out: Jan. 31 at Xavier 3-2 win
(14-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 15-12)
Marshall recovered from a slow start to defeat the Xavier Musketeers on the road in five sets. The Herd trailed by as much as nine throughout most of the first set, and then started off down 6-2 in the second set before rallying to take the lead and tie the match at 1-1. Marshall faltered in the third set before coming alive in the fourth. Redshirt senior Ciara Debell led the way with six kills in the fourth set to help the Herd tie the match again, 2-2. Other than Xavier tying the score at 1-1, Marshall led throughout the fifth set to take the road win. Junior libero Sarah Schank set a program record with 40 digs. Debell led four Herd players in double-figures for kills with 16 followed by junior Macy McElhaney (13), senior Destiny Leon (11) and freshman Anna Calcagno (10). Senior setter Sydney Lostumo set career-highs with 46 assists and six kills. Sophomore Megan Taylor added five kills, all coming in clutch moments.
Sarah Schank Sets Program Record
Junior Sarah Schank, in her first match at libero in her Marshall career, broke a long-standing team record with 40 digs in the win at Xavier. The previous mark of 37 was set by Wendy Williams all the way back on Oct. 9, 1999 against Akron. Schank's 40 is also tied for 10th-best in a single match in Conference USA history. The Naperville, Ill., native had spent her previous two Herd seasons as an outside hitter. She moved to libero after the 2019 graduation of Amber Weber. Schank's previous career-high was 22 against UTSA on Oct. 21, 2018. She had a season-high of 21 versus Charlotte in 2019. Schank tallied 11 digs in the second set to, literally, help dig Marshall out of a hole and tie the match at 1-1. She then recorded 10 in the third and 10 more in the fourth set.
Sydney Lostumo Begins Senior Season with Career Day
Senior setter Sydney Lostumo stepped into a solo role as the helper in the season-opener at Xavier and thrived. After coming off the bench at Fresno State for two years, and then playing in a two-setter rotation in 2019 with the Herd, Lostumo played the entire match and set career-highs with 46 assists and six kills. Her previous best in assists was 37 at FIU in 2019, and she had never had more than one kill in a match in her career. Lostumo knocked down three kills in the second set, including the final point, to help the Herd tie the match at 1-1.
WVU Transfer Macy McElhaney Comes Out Attacking
Junior middle blocker Macy McElhaney had an impressive performance in her Green & White debut. The former WVU Mountaineer established a career-high 13 kills in the win at Xavier. McElhaney's previous best was four, which oddly enough came against Marshall in 2018 (she added a career-high of five blocks in that match as well). The Beaver, Pa., native played two years at WVU and recorded 30 total kills and 16 blocks.
The Opponent: Charlotte 49ers
Charlotte started the year with a sweep at Davidson, and then split a doubleheader at Clemson. Emani Foster leads the 49ers on offense with 56 kills, an average of 4.67 per set, and eight service aces. The team is averaging 13.58 kills per set with a hitting percentage of .278. Sophie Whalen, who has taken over at libero after the graduation of 2019 C-USA Libero of the Year Yumi Garcia, has 45 digs and an average of 3.75 per set. Lara Kretschmer leads the 49ers with 13 total blocks. Charlotte is averaging 2.33 rejections per set, third in conference behind WKU (2.94) and Old Dominion (2.36).
