HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team made it back-to-back sweeps (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) over the Florida Atlantic Owls, Monday in the Cam Henderson Center. Redshirt senior Ciara Debell recorded her 1,000th career kill in her time at Marshall. She has 1,098 total in her collegiate career.

The Thundering Herd improved to 8-4 overall and 6-4 in Conference USA. The Owls drop to 1-10 and 1-8 in league play.

"Bouncing back from the loss at MTSU is more impressive than just winning," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "It is hard because you beat somebody in five but then you lose in four, it is easy to just kind of get deflated. This week in practice was one of the better ones that we have had. We were more offensively focused, scoring on a system and doing some things that we did not put much attention on and I think it really paid off.

"Everything that we worked on in practice this week, paid off this weekend. Which just means that whatever we focus on this week in order to get prepped for (Old Dominion) my expectation is that they will respond well and be able to execute which is really awesome."

As a team, the Herd finished with an attack percentage of .327 while the Owls hit .146. Marshall matched its season-high with 10 aces, with the other coming at FIU on Feb. 22, another sweep. The Herd defense also totaled eight team blocks.

Debell led the team with her seventh double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs. It was also her ninth match of the season with 10 or more kills. Debell hit at a .394 clip to lead the Herd as well. Junior Macy McElhaney tallied 10 kills, hit at a .333 clip, and totaled six blocks.

Freshman Anna Calcagno recorded nine kills, three aces, six digs and one block. Sophomore Megan Taylor tied her career-high with six kills and added two blocks. Junior Zoie Holley recorded two kills and two blocks.

Senior setter Sydney Lostumo finished with 40 assists, an average of 13.33 per set, seven digs and three total blocks. Lostumo was lethal from her serve with a career-high six aces, including four in the third set, good for ninth-best in a single match in program history. Junior libero Sarah Schank led the Herd with 17 digs and had one assist. Freshman Riley Winslow tied her career-best with nine digs and added one assist.

The first set was a tight, back-and-forth battle with seven ties and three lead changes. With Marshall trailing 10-9, Debell went on a tear tallying three straight kills kicking off a 6-0 run. The Owls rallied and tied the match again at 16-16. An Owl service error gave the Herd back the lead, and Marshall did not let go for the rest of the day. The Herd ended the set on a 9-1 run, with Debell's fifth kill of the set as the exclamation point, 25-17.

Marshall began the second set with a 5-0 run with three kills from Debell as well as a kill and an ace from Lostumo. Florida Atlantic cut the deficit to 5-2, but three points was the closest the Owls were able to get through the rest of the set. The Herd rolled out another 6-0 run to put the score at 13-4. Calcagno had two kills late in the period to help pull the Herd closer to the set two victory at 23-15. A block from McElhaney and Lostumo moved it to set-point, and then an Owls attack error ended the frame, 25-15, and gave Marshall the 2-0 lead.

The third set again belonged to the Herd from start to finish. Marshall started with a 5-0 run that featured three aces from Lostumo. Florida Atlantic managed to rally and closed the gap to two points at 14-12. A kill from Taylor put the Herd back on track as Marshall outscored the Owls 11-6 the rest of the way. Another kill from Taylor ended the set, 25-18, and the day with the sweep.

The Herd closes out the regular season at Old Dominion, March 21-22. First serve for both matches is set for 1 p.m., from Norfolk, Va.
