KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Marshall men's golf team finished the first two rounds of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate on Friday. The third and final round tees off Saturday at 10 a.m.

"The conditions today were really tough," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "It was a very cold and windy day. I was pleased with our play today. I thought the guys played pretty well and really fought hard for all 36 holes. I am looking forward to tomorrow and I hope we keep making progress and improving."
Marshall had a seven-stroke improvement in its team score in round two from round one. Redshirt senior Cameron Root and sophomore Tyler Jones lead the Herd. Root recorded an eagle on No. 14 in the first round and also tallied three birdies. Jones recorded six birdies combined in the two rounds.
Redshirt senior Matt Hoffman improved his score by four strokes in the second round for a 1-over 72. Senior Will Straub improved by three strokes in the second round while sophomore Christian Boyd bettered his score by one. Senior Brad Plaziak, playing as an individual, also saw his score improve by one in the second round.
UNC Wilmington holds a six-stroke lead over VCU in the team competition. Sander Akeren of UNCW leads the field by five strokes over Eduardo Carrete of Jacksonville.
