Men’s Golf Improves in Second Round of Conference USA Championships

Root and Jones both score 1-under 71 on Tuesday

TEXARKANA, Ark. – Marshall men's golf improved its team score by 13 strokes in the second round of the Conference USA Championships on Tuesday, hosted at the Texarkana Country Club.
The Thundering Herd saw its team score drop from 308 on Monday to 295 on Tuesday, and the team sits in 13th place. The third and final round of stroke play tees off at 9 a.m. eastern/8 a.m. central. Marshall's players begin at 9:50 a.m. eastern/8:50 a.m. central on the back nine. Live scoring is provided by GolfStat.com. Due to the chance of inclement weather on Thursday, match play for the semi-finals will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the final round of stroke play.
"Tyler (Jones) and Cameron (Root) played great today," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "It was good to see the team improvement from the first round to today. We have several kids playing this tournament and course for the first time. I am pleased to see how the guys are making good decisions and really hitting some great shots. We are looking forward to getting back on the golf course tomorrow."
Redshirt senior Cameron Root improved his score by nine strokes to jump up 14 places on the leaderboard. Root totaled three birdies and scored a season-best 1-under 71. Sophomore Tyler Jones dropped his score by three strokes to also finish with a 1-under 71. Jones tallied three birdies and an eagle on No. 2, a par five hole, all in the front nine to finish the day as the Marshall players began on the back nine.
Sophomore Christian Boyd improved his score by two strokes and also scored an eagle on No. 2. Redshirt senior Will Straub dropped his score by three strokes from the first round.
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders stormed forward with a team score of 13-under 275 to take the lead. MTSU leads No. 33 Charlotte and No. 44 UTSA by two strokes. Gustav Fransson of Old Dominion jumped four places and has a one-stroke lead over Vicente Marzilio of North Texas atop the leaderboard.
