KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Marshall men's golf completed the final round of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate on Saturday, highlighted by sophomore Tyler Jones 4-under that allowed him to jump into the top 10.
The Thundering Herd had a six-stroke improvement in the third round and finished tied for 13th. Jones' 67 was tied for the second-best score on Saturday.
"Tyler (Jones) continues his spectacular play," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "He played well all week but really capitalized today and shot an impressive 4-under. We are really improving every round and I like what I am seeing out of the rest of the guys. We will have a week of practice to get ready for our next tournament at the Pete Dye Mountaineer Intercollegiate at Pete Dye Golf Club."
Jones tallied three birdies and an eagle on No. 14 on Saturday. Every player for the Herd sank at least one birdie in the third round. Redshirt senior Matt Hoffman had three birdies and finished with a 1-over 72, tying his score from the second round. Redshirt senior Will Straub recorded three birdies as well as ended with a 2-over 73. Redshirt senior Cameron Root and sophomore Christian Boyd had two birdies each. Senior Brad Plaziak had one.
Jones improved by six strokes in the final round and moved up 22 places on the leaderboard. Hoffman, with another 72 on Saturday, moved up nine places and finished tied for 29th. Straub improved his score by two shots and moved up three places.
UNC Wilmington stayed in the lead with a team score of 9-under 275 on Saturday and led the field by 16 strokes. VCU finished as the runner-up. Sander Akeren of UNCW also stayed at the top of the leaderboard with a 10-stroke lead over teammate Blake McShea who came in second.
