Baseball Falls in Game One of Series with WKU

4/30/2021 7:41:00 PM | Baseball

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Herd baseball (8-25, 4-17 C-USA) rallied from a four-run deficit, but ultimately fell to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 10-6, in game one on Friday afternoon at the Kennedy Center.

Herd starting pitcher Chad Heiner struggled in the early going giving up four runs in the first two innings. However, the righty settled in and completed his outing with four consecutive scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks from the top of the third through the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the third, designated hitter Kyle Schaefer got MU on the board with a leadoff homer, his sixth of the season, to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Then in the fifth, first baseman Zach Inskeep collected a two-out single and third baseman Peter Hutzal followed with a walk. Shortstop Geordon Blanton then recorded a double down the left-field line to cut the WKU lead to 4-2.

The two-out lightning continued for MU in the bottom of the sixth. With Blanton and Inskeep on first and second with two outs, right fielder Jordon Billups smoked a ball to right center for a bases clearing double to tie the game, 4-4. Second baseman Travis Sankovich gave the Herd its first lead of the game sending an 0-1 pitch through the right side to score Billups and make it 5-4.

Despite Sankovich collecting a two-out RBI in the eighth, the WKU bats heated up late scoring three runs in the seventh, one in eighth and two in the ninth as the Herd fell in the contest.
