MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Herd baseball (8-33, 4-24 C-USA) fell short in a 4-1 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers (18-23, 7-14 Big 12) on Tuesday night in Morgantown.
Marshall starting pitcher Raymond Pacella gave up a leadoff double in the bottom first, but faced the minimum to begin his outing with a strikeout and picking off the runner.
The Mountaineers put three across the plate in the bottom of the second to put MU down 3-0.
The Herd got a run back in the top of the third. Right fielder Jordon Billups drew a two-out walk, left fielder Josh Pigozzo singled to left and center fielder Luke Edwards drew a four-pitch base on balls to load the bases. Billups then scored on wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-1. However, WVU answered with a run in the bottom of the third to extend its advantage back to three, 4-1.
Pacella settled in throwing three straight scoreless frames in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with four strike outs. He concluded his outing with a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth.
Reliever Will Dando came on in the bottom of seventh as he struck out a pair of Mountaineers and stranded a runner at second to end the inning.
Relief pitcher Nick Adkins followed Dando throwing a scoreless eighth and striking out two more WVU hitters.
MU couldn't overcome the deficit in the ninth as it fell by the three-run margin.
