Herd Baseball Takes Series Opener Over UAB

Chad Heiner picked up his first career win as Josh Zeboskey picked up his career save.
Heiner threw three scoreless innings to start his outing, stranding four on the bases and striking out three Blazers.
Right fielder Jordon Billups led off the game getting on base by a UAB error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a walk to center fielder Josh Pigozzo and another wild pitch, MU had runners at second and third with no outs. Third baseman Travis Sankovich then grounded out to second, but Billups scored for the first run of the game.
Schaefer hit a leadoff homer to left in the bottom of the second to put the Herd up 2-0, his eighth of the season. Then after first baseman Zach Inskeep was hit by a pitch and a single by left fielder Cyrus Grimes moved Inskeep to second, shortstop Geordon Blanton brought Inskeep home on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
The Marshall bats continued to remain hot in the bottom of the third as Billups and Pigozzo led off the inning with a pair of singles. After Sankovich reached on a fielder's choice, it left the Herd with runners at the corners and one out. On the very next pitch, Leitch blasted a ball over the left-field wall for a three-run blast, his team-leading ninth of the season, to give MU a 6-0 advantage.
UAB collected its first run in the top of the fourth, but the Herd answered quickly as a RBI triple by Blanton and a sacrifice fly by second baseman Devin Ward extended the lead to 8-1.
The Blazers struck for a run in the top of fourth and plated another three in the fifth to make it an 8-5 ballgame with Marshall on top.
Zeboskey came on for Heiner in the top of the seventh, and despite giving up a run in the eighth, shutdown the Blazers as he closed out the final three innings striking out four and giving up just three hits, earning the first save of his career.
