HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Herd baseball (10-35, 6-26 C-USA) used a six-run fifth inning to take down the UAB Blazers (18-35, 12-19 C-USA), 7-5, on Sunday in the regular season finale.
MU honored relief pitchers Michael Guerrero, Nick Adkins, Bryan Callaly, D'Andre Knight, Josh Zeboskey and infielder Zach Inskeep as part of Senior Day in a ceremony prior to the game.
"It's a great way to end the season, especially for our seniors who have been really good for not only the baseball program, but for Marshall University," Marshall head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the win. "I'm proud of them sticking through a tough year dealing with COVID, but coming back was huge. We appreciate them coming back. I'm excited for their futures. I'm proud they all got their degrees. They have bright futures ahead of them."
The Blazers took the early lead in the top of the first, but second baseman Travis Sankovich launched his third homer of the season to right for what would be Marshall's lone hit until the fifth inning to tie it 1-1.
Starting pitcher Hunter Harritan settled in and threw a scoreless second inning.
However, UAB struck for a pair of runs in the top of third, but Knight recorded the final two outs to keep the deficit at 3-1.
Adkins followed with a scoreless top of the fourth striking out one Blazer in the inning.
Raymond Pacella came on in the top of fifth and gave up a pair of runs as the Herd trailed 5-1, but the Herd bats would pick him up in the bottom of the inning.
Shortstop Geordon Blanton led off the frame with a double through the left side, designated hitter Kyle Schaefer and left fielder Josh Pigozzo followed with walks to load the bases.
Right fielder Jordon Billups then smoked a ground-rule double to center, scoring Blanton and Schaefer. Pigozzo then scored on a wild pitch and Billups moved up to third to cut the deficit to 5-4 with no outs.
Sankovich then collected his second RBI of the contest and tied the game 5-5 by scoring Billups on a sacrifice fly.
Centerfielder Luke Edwards blasted a ball down the left-field line and two pitches later catcher Ryan Leitch hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season to give Marshall its first lead of the contest at 7-5.
Pacella rebounded throwing scoreless sixth, seventh and eighth innings, including stranding the bases loaded in the seventh with a strikeout and striking out the side in the eighth.
Reliever Will Dando started the ninth, striking out his lone batter faced. Zeboskey then came on from the bullpen and despite giving up two hits, stranded runners at second and third to pick up the second save of his career and the weekend as Pacella earned his second win of the season.
