Softball Splits in Saturday Doubleheader at Charlotte

McCown wins game one in first collegiate start

Box Score: Game One | Game Two

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Marshall softball team took a split against the Charlotte 49ers in the doubleheader on Saturday. The Herd won game one 4-3 and then dropped game two, 13-2 in six innings.
 
The Thundering Herd is now 19-11 overall and 8-7 in Conference USA. The 49ers are now 29-17 overall and 13-6 in league action. Marshall and Charlotte have both secured spots in the Conference USA Tournament. Seeding will still be determined with games on Sunday.
 
Game One: Marshall 4, Charlotte 3
Freshman Brianna McCown received her first collegiate start and tossed a career-high six innings with five strikeouts and earned the win. It was his third of the year. McCown's previous nine appearances this season had all been in relief. Senior Megan Stauffer pitched the bottom of the seventh and retired the 49ers in order to earn her first career save.
 
The Herd scored first in the top of the first inning. Senior Aly Harrell led off with a walk and then two batters later, senior Katie Adams blasted a pitch over the fence in right for a home run. It was her third homer of the season and sixth of her career. Charlotte responded with one run in the bottom of the inning.
 
Marshall maintained a 2-1 lead into the fifth before adding one more run. Junior Mya Stevenson led off the inning. Graduate Sierra Huerta was hit by a pitch for the second time in the contest to put two runners on base. It was Huerta's 10th of the season and 46th of her career. Freshman Paige Halliwill had a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Two batters later, senior Madison Whitaker was walked to load the bases. Freshman Kat Sackett came in to pinch hit and forced an error at second that allowed Stevenson to score from third.
 
Charlotte tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Halliwill made a great diving catch in shallow center to end the inning and move on to the seventh.
 
In the top of the seventh, freshman Kay Kay Kenney led off with a walk and then Whitaker got on board with a hit-by-pitch. Senior Armani Brown moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With Harrell at the plate, there was a wild pitch that allowed Kenney to score and give Marshall a 4-3 lead.
 
Stauffer came out finished the game in just seven pitches, including a strikeout for the second out.
 
Harrell was walked three times in the game and now has 130 in her career. Senior Saige Pye tallied two hits and Adams finished with two RBI. Kenney drew two walks, had one hit and scored the go-ahead run.
 
Game Two: Charlotte 13, Marshall 2 – 6 innings
The game started off as a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the third when Charlotte scored five runs. The 49ers added three more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.
 
Marshall came up in the top of the fifth and scored two runs to at least push the game into the bottom of the fifth. Armani Brown came to the plate with two outs and ripped a double to the right-center gap. Aly Harrell then belted a towering home run to right field. It was Harrell's 10th of the season and 40th of her career. The Herd cut the deficit to six at 8-2.
 
Charlotte added one more run in the bottom of the fifth. Marshall put two runners on base in the top of the sixth but could not find the timely hit. The 49ers then ended the game in the bottom of the sixth for the run-rule victory.
 
Redshirt sophomore Cailey Joyce had the start in the circle and pitched into the third. Redshirt freshman Madi Garay came on in relief and threw two-third of an inning, followed by sophomore Ashley Blessin who was tossed two-thirds. Senior Laney Jones threw the final 1.2 innings. Joyce was credited with the loss.
 
Harrell continued her on-base streak to now 16-straight games with the home run in the fifth. Saige Pye and Mya Stevenson are both on 10-game hitting streaks. Pye had one hit and reached on an error in the first. Stevenson was 2-of-3 in game two.
 
The series and regular season finale is set for Sunday at 12 p.m. The game will be streamed on CUSAtv as well as broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul, with Scott Hall on the call.
