Women’s Soccer Ties Morehead State in Weather-Shortened Contest

Jarvis scores first collegiate goal

Box Score

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Marshall women's soccer (0-3-1) pushed the pace of play at Morehead State (1-2-1), but lightning forced a halt to the match in the 75th minute for a 1-1 tie. MU outshot MSU 9-4 in the contest.

"For the 75 minutes we are able to play before the thunderstorms, we were looking like the team who was going to win," Herd women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the match. "We created numerous opportunities in or around the goal. We had some great shots from distance, but we have to be more clinical inside the 18-yard box. We did a fantastic job and showed a lot of character coming back from 1-0 down after giving up a disappointing penalty. But we regrouped, showed a lot of leadership and class on the ball."

The Herd came out firing as senior forward Kat Gonzalez fired a shot that was blocked in the first minute and freshman defender/midfielder Ava Hall had a shot saved by Eagles goalkeeper Michelle Jerantowski in the second minute.

After neither side recorded a shot in the next eight minutes of action, MSU drew a foul in the box for a penalty kick. Colleen Swift went to the spot and placed it just out of reach of freshman goalkeeper Mira Pastoft to put MU down 1-0 at the 11:25 mark. Pastoft made the first start of her collegiate career in the contest.

Hall came back with another attempt at Jerantowski two minutes later, but saw the effort saved as Pastoft rebounded made a save on a Morehead shot in the 15th minute.

Then in the 29th minute, junior forward Morgan White sprinted with the ball down the left wing, passed the ball by the MSU keeper to freshman forward Meg Jarvis in the middle of the box and Jarvis bashed it into the middle of the net for her first collegiate goal to tie the game 1-1 on what was eventually the last shot of the half.

"We got a nice goal from Meg (Jarvis)," Swan commented. "Morgan took it down the left-hand side, crossed it in and Meg finished it inside the six (yard-box). Any great center forward scores goals inside the six and we'll be looking for a lot more of that in Meg's game."

The second half was dominated by the MU offense as it out outshot MSU 5-2 and featured the lone three shots on goal in the half

Gonzalez had one and White had the other two, but all three were saved in the 58th, 59th and 65th minutes, respectively.

However, the game was delayed for nearly an hour in the 75th minute before it was officially called due to lightning in the area.

"I'm absolutely delighted with the performance, but I wish we had been more clinical in the final third. If we had, I think it would have been a different game than we are talking about at this point. However, it's a young team and they showed a lot of character," Swan said as part of his final thoughts.
