Box Score
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Behind goals from junior forward Morgan White and senior forward Kat Gonzalez, Marshall women's soccer (1-3-1) picked up its first win of the season, 2-1, on the road over the Youngstown State Penguins (0-4-0) on Thursday night.
"I'm so delighted for the players. They've been working hard, taking in all the coaching points and then trying to execute, and tonight it paid off," Herd women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the victory. "First half's performance was good from the start and we could've been a couple up. I'm delighted with the way we scored the first with Morgan poking it in and then Alyssa (Hardin) chasing down a dead ball to get us a penalty for the second showed our character. And what a super penalty from Kat. It's great to get our first one and we will look to follow it up with another one Sunday against Akron."
Freshman midfielder Cassidy Bell and forward Meg Jarvis fired the first two shots of the game in the first 10 minutes, but both were off target.
Sophomore midfielder Abi Hugh placed the first shot on goal at the 18:18 mark, but it was saved by a Penguin defender. White, Bell and freshman midfielder Courtney Corcoran followed up with shots in the 20th, 25th and 27th minutes, respectively, but all were saved by YSU goalkeeper Zeeyana Jivraj.
MU junior goalkeeper Courtney McVicker saved a Penguin shot at the 41:27 mark to keep the score tied at halftime.
Freshman goalkeeper Mira Pastoft took over in net to begin the second half and made a save 30 seconds into the second period of play.
Gonzalez fired a ball on target that was saved at the 47:10 mark, but White put MU on the board seven seconds later with her first goal of the season.
The Green and White kept up the offensive pressure as Hugh and White put shots on target in the 50th minute and junior midfielder Iselin Noevik had one of her own the next minute. However, all three attempts were saved as the scored remained 1-0 Marshall.
Pastoft kept the Penguins off the board with her second save of the contest in the 65th minute of play.
Then in the 70th minute, Marshall drew a penalty and saw Gonzalez go to the spot for the penalty kick. The senior forward blasted it past the keeper to make it 2-0 Herd. It was Gonzalez's first goal of the season.
Maddie Root scored for YSU in the 81st minute, but Marshall hung on for the 2-1 triumph as Pastoft picked up her first collegiate win.
