Women’s Soccer Falls to WKU in Overtime

Jarvis scores third goal in last two games

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall Thundering Herd women's soccer team (3-5-1, 0-1-0 C-USA) took the defending Conference USA East Division Champion WKU Hilltoppers (6-1-0, 1-0-0 C-USA) to overtime, but fell 2-1 in the C-USA opener at Hoops Family Field on Thursday night.

"I thought it was an outstanding performance from the goalkeeper all the way through the team, including the players on the sideline," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the loss. "We just took the C-USA East Division Champions to overtime. To be honest a rub of the green, we win the game with a chance at the end, but we lose it in overtime. That sucks the life out of you. We regroup tomorrow, get back on the field and prepare for Sunday."

The two sides both struggled offensively the first few minutes of the contest before WKU's Avery Jacobsen put a shot on goal, but MU freshman goalkeeper Mira Pastoft made the save in the ninth minute.

At the 23:54 mark, Lily Rummo nearly gave the Hilltoppers a goal, but Pastoft made a diving save to keep the ball out of the left corner keeping it scoreless.

Senior forward Kat Gonzalez fired Marshall's lone attempt on target of the half in the 27th minute off a free kick, but WKU keeper Alexis Bach made the save.

The Herd defense then came up with a big block in the 36th minute and Pastoft made her third save of the opening frame at 40:32 mark to keep the match scoreless at halftime.

Just over nine minutes into the second half, junior forward Morgan White dribbled the ball into the right side of the 18-yard box, crossed it in and found freshman forward Meg Jarvis to make it 1-0 Marshall at the 54:57 mark. It was Jarvis' third goal in the last two games and team-leading fourth of the season.

"We're starting to see it from all of our front players. Meg and Morgan gets the headlines for the goal, but I think the best player on the field, and I think their coaches would agree, was Ava Hall tonight. She was outstanding. She pulled them a part. She single-handedly drug their all-conference center-midfielder everywhere. She's the type of player who is going to be an all-conference player in years to come. If Ava, Meg, Morgan and everyone else continues to do that, we're going to be successful. It was a performance that warranted a result, but we came up short," Swan commented.

Freshman midfielder Cassidy Bell put a shot on goal in the 69th minute, but Bach was there for the save.

In the 82nd minute, Mackenzie Crittenberger fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box, deflected off Pastoft and went into the back of the net to tie the contest 1-1.

Four minutes later, Pastoft rebounded and saved another attempt by Crittenberger, then Bell fired a shot in the 87th minute, but Bach made the save sending the game to overtime.

23 seconds into overtime, Brina Micheels sent in a cross, finding Sophia Fondren's who headed the ball into the right corner of the goal as MU fell 2-1. Micheels assisted on both of the Hilltopper goals.

"What I want to see tomorrow after we reflect, and we try to put to bed the loss, I want to see them with determination that we deserved more out of that. We deserve more out of the rest of the season and we're going to go get it. I think we have it in us. The way we've played the last six games, we've played some of the best stuff since I've been here," Swan said about heading into Sunday.
