Jarvis scores fifth goal, Pastoft makes seven saves
Box Score
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Marshall Thundering Herd women's soccer team (3-6-1, 0-2-0 C-USA) fell in its Conference USA road opener, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (6-2-0, 2-0-0 C-USA).
"It's always tough to win a game in conference play when you're always chasing it from the start, and that's what happened today," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the match. "Unfortunately, the first 20 minutes we were sluggish, not close defensively and a good team like Southern Miss is going to hurt you. We created some great chances today, which was great, but you've got to take them when they come to you as well."
Freshman goalkeeper Mira Pastoft started the contest with a save at the 5:35 mark to keep the game scoreless.
Less than a minute later Ryan Smith recorded the first goal of the match for USM followed by a goal by Blessing Kingsley as MU trailed 2-0 in the 10th minute.
Junior forward Morgan White and freshman forward Meg Jarvis fired consecutive shots in 14th minute, but both attempts were saved.
Pastoft followed with saves in 15th, 17th and 21st minutes to keep the deficit 2-0.
Then at the 23:23 mark, White drew a penalty in the 18-yard box and Jarvis went to the spot for the penalty kick. Jarvis slotted home her fifth goal of the season to cut the score line in half, 2-1.
Just over two minutes later, Mia Sadler tallied a goal for the Golden Eagles as Marshall trailed 3-1.
Freshman defender Kennedy Gunter tried to get back the goal for the Green and White with a shot on goal at 33:23 mark, but the USM keeper was there for the save.
USM's Ember Temple scored her sides fourth goal of the contest at 34:23 with Marshall's deficit at 4-1.
Freshman midfielder Cassidy Bell put a shot goal in the 39th minute that was saved, but freshman forward Cami Wolf buried a Marshall goal with 59 seconds left in the half to cut it to 4-2.
"We can't fault the character to get us back in it before halftime with a great goal by Cami," Swan commented on Wolf's goal.
Freshman midfielder Courtney Corcoran launched the first shot on target of the second half at the 62:52 mark that was saved and Pastoft made another save in the 65th minute as the score remained 4-2.
Freshman forward Alyssa Hardin and senior forward Kat Gonzalez each had shots saved in the 72nd and 75th minutes, respectively, with Pastoft making a save in the 74th.
Pastoft made her seventh and final save of the contest in the 82nd minute as MU fell to the Golden Eagles.
