Marshall Women’s Soccer Thunders Back to Earn Critical Road Draw

89th minute game-tying goal from Corcoran completes comeback

Box Score

CONWAY, S.C. – An 89th minute goal from Courtney Corcoran helped the Marshall University women's soccer team draw their match against Coastal Carolina, 2-2. Marshall trailed 2-0 with just 15 minutes remaining, but Corcoran's equalizer as well as a PK goal from Kat Gonzalez and late saves from goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth helped Coach Michael Swan's side pick up a needed road draw.

"We showed amazing fight tonight and it shows the character and talent we have in this team," Swan said. "Even though we were two goals down in the first half, we were creating chances from the first whistle and to be honest, we shouldn't have been down in that early exchange."

Marshall controlled the pace of the match early, but it was Coastal Carolina who struck first. A goal in the 10th minute off a corner kick put the Chanticleers in front early. The hosts doubled their lead in the 23rd off a breakaway down the left side from their leading scorer, Megan Brouse. Coach Swan's side rebounded for three shots in the first half but were unable to cut into the deficit, trailing 2-0 at the break.

Marshall mounted second half pressure from the opening kick. The Herd dominated the possession, outshooting the Chants 10-5 throughout the second half as Marshall searched for the equalizer. The pressure was rewarded when Makai Laguines was brought down in the box. Gonzalez converted the ensuing penalty kick to bring Marshall back to within 2-1 in the 74th minute.

In the waning seconds of the match, Corcoran found an opening in the Coastal defense with her stunning shot at the top of the box beating the CCU keeper to level the match.

"Second half we went for it and made the decision to throw more bodies forward and be brave and our group did that tonight," Swan added. "Makai showed fight to win us the penalty and Kat had great composure to convert and then from there we set the stage for Courtney who scored an absolute screamer to tie it up."

Wolgemuth, who made six saves total in the match, made her largest save moments after the equalizer. As the Chanticleers moved numbers forward in desperation, the freshman from Lincolnton, North Carolina forced a glancing header to go off the crossbar before it was cleared to safety, securing the 2-2 draw.

"We talk about character and players who rise to the occasion and we had many do that at 2-0 down but we've got to single out Alexis in the 89th minute to come up with a world class save to keep it at 2-2."

The Thundering Herd (2-8-5, 1-4-3 Sun Belt) needed the draw to keep pace in the East in hopes of making the 10-team conference tournament.
