Marshall’s Comeback Falls Short Against Coastal Carolina

HUNTINGTON, W.Va- A flurry of first quarter touchdowns proved to be too much for the Marshall Thundering Herd Saturday night. The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers left Huntington with a 24-13 win in front of a Joan C. Edwards' homecoming crowd of 24,954.
Quarterback Cam Fancher had a season-best 320 yards passing, completing 19 of 36 passes.
Marshall sixth-year running back Khalan Laborn rushed for a touchdown in his eighth consecutive game. Laborn finished with 59 yards on 16 attempts.
Junior Corey Gammage finished with a new career-high of 187 yards receiving on eight catches.
Marshall (4-4, 1-3 Sun Belt) built momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Chanticleers 10-0 after falling behind by three touchdowns in the first. Laborn's two yard rush capped off a six play, 75 yard drive to bring Marshall to within 21-7. Freshman kicker Rece Verhoff's first of two field goals in the game brought the Herd to within 21-10 at the half.
The Thundering Herd had several opportunities to further cut into the Coastal Carolina (7-1, 4-1 Sun Belt) lead. But a pair of penalties, a blocked field goal, and second half turnovers prevented the Herd from further chipping at the deficit.
The Herd's defense held strong after the opening quarter, much like a week ago against JMU. Marshall held CCU to 81 yards over the final three quarters.
Junior linebacker Eli Neal finished with 14 tackles. Redshirt senior Koby Cumberlander brought down the Coastal quarterback once solo, and split a sack with redshirt junior Owen Porter, who finished with five total tackles.
Marshall football will visit Old Dominion next on Saturday, November 5. Kickoff from S.B. Ballard Stadium will be at 2 p.m.
