The Tribute Game
The Marshall University football team debuted black helmets for the first time in program history earlier this season. Now, in the team's annual 1970 Tribute Game, the team will be wearing black helmets again, with a special meaning.
The black helmet features a throwback logo of "Marco" the school's mascot as worn by the 1971 "Young Thundering Herd," the team made up of underclassmen following the tragic plane crash from the previous fall. The nameplate on the back of the helmet will also feature the words `"Young Thundering Herd." Along the stripe of the helmet reads the names of all 75 people on board who died on November 14, 1970. The retro MU logo on the front of the helmet represents the school's logo the year of the crash. The helmet features tributes to the teams both before and after the crash, as the team and school honors the legacy of both teams 52 years later.
PRE-GAME NOTES
Following a 12-0 shutout victory at ODU, Marshall enters Saturday's game with a 5-4 record (2-3 Sun Belt). The Thundering Herd defense has not allowed an opponent in the end zone after the first quarter in the last three games.
