Box Score
Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (9-19, 3-13 Sun Belt) handed the Arkansas State Red Wolves (7-21, 2-14 Sun Belt) a four-set defeat (25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 25-22) on Friday night in the Cam Henderson Center to complete the weekend sweep on Senior Day.
Â
"I am so proud of this group for rallying another night on the offensive and defensive ends," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said after the win. "Macy was a huge piece for us and has been such an amazing leader on the floor for us. Essence came alive, stayed consistent and remained a threat at the net all match. I can't say enough about Brynn Brown having another double-double and continuing to put her hitters in successful situations. This was a great team win to prepare us for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament next week, and a great way for our seniors to end their home playing careers on a win."
Â
The Herd honored Kayla Malec, Kaitlyn Gehler, Meagan Camden and Macy McElhaney as part of its Senior Day festivities after the match.
Â
Sophomore Brynn Brown registered her 12th double-double of the season with 43 assists and 10 digs.
Â
Graduate student Macy McElhaney recorded a match-high 21 kills to go with seven digs and three blocks. Senior Lydia Montague had 18 kills, while senior Essence Clerkley added 10 and a match-high six blocks.
Â
A-State took the first point of the match, but the Herd quickly jumped on top with a Clerkley kill and a Macy McElhaney service ace. Although the Red Wolves would tie the score four more times, MU closed out the opening set with five of the last eight points as a McElhaney kill clinched it 25-22.
Â
Arkansas State took the second set 25-20 and was up 5-2 on the Herd in the third as the visitors seemed to swing the momentum away from the home team. However, Marshall answered with a 14-0 rally to take a 16-5 advantage. The rally saw McElhaney record six kills, Clerkley with a pair of kills and Montague along junior Olivia Fogo adding a kill each. The Herd held the Red Wolves at bay as it took the third by a 12-point margin, 25-13.
Â
The fourth set saw the Green and White trail for the majority of the first half of the set. But Marshall did not want to see a fifth set like it did on Thursday. After a Montague kill gave Marshall a 12-11 lead, the home squad didn't look back. Even with the scoreboard tied 22-22, the Herd used a McElhaney kill and a pair of A-State errors to seal the set and match for the weekend sweep.
Â
UP NEXT
The Herd will travel to Foley, Alabama, to begin the 2022 Sun Belt Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday.
