Men’s Golf Begins Loyola Intercollegiate with Solid First Round

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Marshall men's golf team played a solid first round on day one of the Loyola Intercollegiate on Sunday. Freshman Ryan Bilby leads the Herd after the first day, tied for ninth overall.
The Thundering Herd is tied for eighth overall out of 18 teams. Marshall finished with a team score of a 1-under 287. The second round tees off on Monday at 7:45 a.m. local time, 9:45 a.m. eastern. The Herd will begin on holes 13-17. Live scoring is provided by GolfStat.com.
"It was a very good first round for us to start the spring," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "Ryan (Bilby) played a very solid round and capped it off with a nice birdie to finish the round. Brett (Montgomery) and Brad (Plaziak) both played very well today. I am hoping we improve on today in tomorrow's second round."
Bilby shot par or better on 16-of-18 holes on Sunday and hit five total birdies including No. 9 to end the day. The Follansbee, West Virginia, native had back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15 and again on Nos. 17 and 18. Bilby finished one stroke off his season-best with a 4-under 68.
Redshirt freshman Brett Montgomery and fifth-year senior Brad Plaziak are both tied for 15th after scoring a 2-under 70, a season-best score for Plaziak. Montgomery had five birdies and eagled No. 14, scoring a three on the par-5 hole. Plaziak finished the day with five birdies including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 to end his round.
Fifth-year senior Noah Mullens recorded four birdies on Sunday. Redshirt freshman Andrew Wyss had two birdies and junior Tyler Jones sank one birdie.
Utah Valley leads the team competition by two strokes over No. 86 Middle Tennessee. Three players are tied at the top of the field. Kai Iguchi of Utah Valley, Kevin Jegers of Middle Tennessee and Angus O'Brien of Seton Hall all scored a 6-under 66.
