PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Marshall University baseball team (2-3) used a two-out rally in the 10th to down the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (0-1), 11-7, in extra innings on Friday in Port Charlotte, Florida.

"Our guys battled all night and found a way to finish it off with a win to start the weekend," Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the victory. "We need to need to carry what we did tonight into tomorrow to be ready to play against a good Northeastern team."

Herd starting pitcher Jeffrey Purnell came out of the gates hot as he threw three scoreless frames and struck out the side in the first to begin his outing.

Marshall's bats opened the scoring in the top of the fourth. Designated hitter Cole Williams collected his second single of the game sending a pitch to center with one out. First baseman Daniel Carinci then reached on an error and second baseman Christian Lucio single followed with a single to load the bases. Right fielder Jordon Billups then singled to right, scoring Williams and Carinci, to give the Herd a 2-0 lead.

After Lucio stole third and third baseman Eddie Leon drew a walk, shortstop Geordon Blanton and first baseman Kyle Schaefer each drew a base-loaded walk to plate two more runs. Center fielder Luke Edwards brought home Leon on a sacrifice fly and catcher Ryan Leitch singled home Blanton as Marshall led 6-0 after the top of the fourth.

The Bonnies struck for a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Purnell closed the inning with a strikeout and stranded a runner at third to end the inning. The righty then closed his outing with a scoreless bottom of the fifth to keep MU on top 6-1.

Reliever Chad Heiner came on to begin the bottom of the sixth and struck out two Bonnies in a scoreless frame.

After St. Bonaventure scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, Edwards plated his second RBI of ballgame on a single to left, scoring Travis Sankovich. The single gave the Green and White a 7-4 advantage.

The Bonnies tallied three runs in the bottom of the eighth and was poised to try and win the contest as it had a runner at second with no outs after tying the score, 7-7, on a single by Matthew Williams. Reliever Cole Agemy settled down and struck out three consecutive batters to send the game to extra innings.

In the tenth, the Herd had Billups at second and Sankovich at first with two outs and Schaefer at the plate. The junior sent the offering to center scoring Billups. Edwards followed with a single to left to score Sankovich and put MU up 9-7. Leitch concluded the two-out rally with a bases-clearing double to have the Herd leading 11-7 going to the bottom of the 10th.

Agemy stayed on the mound and struck out three Bonnies in a scoreless bottom of the 10th to give Marshall the victory.
