Game 1 Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (10-5) took game one, 7-6, of the doubleheader over the Merrimack College Warriors (2-7), but game two was suspended due to darkness with the score tied 9-9 after nine innings on Friday at the Kennedy Center.

"Credit to them for coming back," Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said the Warriors came back in both contests. "I don't think we did a good enough job playing every pitch. We have to be better. We have to be ready to go on Sunday."

Game 1 Marshall 7, Merrimack 6

After Herd starting pitcher Jeffrey Purnell started the game with a 1-2-3 top of the first, Kyle Schaefer sent a pitch over the wall in right field for his then team-leading fourth homer of the season.

In the top the second, Andrew Selima answered with a long ball for the Warriors to tie the game, 1-1.

Marshall didn't wait long to regain the lead. With one out in the bottom of the second, Christian Lucio singled and stole a pair of bases, Jordon Billups was hit-by-a-pitch and Travis Sankovich drew a walk to load the bases. Geordon Blanton then received a free pass scoring Lucio and a Daniel Carinci sacrifice fly scored Billups for the home team to go up 3-1.

Ryan Leitch got in on the action as he hit a three-run dinger in the fifth to right center to give MU a 6-1 lead. It was the sophomore's fourth of the season, tying Schaefer for the team lead.

After giving up the home run in the second, Purnell concluded his outing with four scoreless frames as he exited after six. The righty allowed just one run on two hits as he struck out nine with no walks.

Schaefer collected his second RBI of the contest on a single to right that scored Sankovich and gave Marshall a 7-1 lead through six innings of play.

Merrimack struck for three runs in the top of the seventh, including Selima's second homer of the game, and two more in the eighth to cut the Herd's lead to one run, 7-6.

Herd relief pitcher Cody Sharp came on for Cole Agemy with Warriors at the corners and one out in the top of the ninth. Sharp induced a game-ending 5-4-3 double play to preserve the win for Marshall and earn the save. Purnell picked up his second win of the season.

Game 2 Marshall 9, Merrimack 9 through 9 innings
Much like the first game, the Herd didn't wait long to get on the board. Starting pitcher Patrick Copen opened the ballgame with a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless top of the first. Then Carinci led off with a double right center. With one out and Carinci at second, Edwards doubled to left center, scoring Carinci to give MU the 1-0 lead.

Carinci came back to the plate the next half inning and singled down the left-field line to score Billups and Eddie Leon as Marshall led 3-0.

The Herd's hot bats continued into the third as Edwards hit a leadoff homer. Then with two outs, a Lucio double to right center and an error by the Merrimack center fielder, plated Drew Steelhammer for the fifth run of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, MU plated three more runs on a Carinci single and a two-run long-ball by Edwards, his second of the game, to go up 8-0.

Copen's outing came to an end after four-scoreless innings as he gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Zac Addkison came on in relief of Copen to start the fifth inning. The sophomore threw scoreless fifth and sixth frames, while giving up a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings in his four innings of work. Addkison had three strikeouts in his outing.

The Warriors batted through the order and tallied seven runs to go up 9-8 after the top of the ninth.

The resilient Herd were not ready to go down without a fight. After Carinci hit into a double play, Schaefer stepped to the plate with two outs. Schaefer singled to right and Zach Gardiner followed with a single to center to put runners at first and second. Cole Williams came to the plate and recorded a pinch-hit single through the right side which saw Schaefer cross home to tie the game.

The umpires postponed the game after the ninth inning due to darkness.
