ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Marshall men's golf team finished the Sea Palms Invitational with the second-best team score on Saturday and climbed into third place. Junior Tyler Jones led the way as the runner-up after scoring a 4-under 67 in the third round.

"I was so happy for the guys this week," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "They battled all week and played some really solid golf in tough conditions. Tyler Jones played so well this week and finished solo second. Brett (Montgomery), Noah (Mullens), and Ryan (Bilby) played really good golf this week and really finished strong today. Andrew (Wyss) got off to a good start this week. It was also nice to see Bennett (Zeitner) play well in his first trip on the road. This was a really good tournament for us and I am looking forward to heading to Tennessee next week."

The Thundering Herd finished with an even par team score of 284, second only to Wright State who won the event. Marshall continued to improve its score throughout the tournament. The Herd shot 299 in the first round, then dropped to 295 in the second and finally knocking off 11 more strokes in the third round.

Jones bounced back from scoring a 4-over 75 in the second round, with his 4-under in the third and jumped into the second place spot. Jones hit five birdies and had just one bogey in the final round. The Westerville, Ohio, native tied for the lead in the tournament with shooting par on 38 holes. He finished scoring par or better on 48-of-54 holes.

Redshirt freshman Brett Montgomery improved his score in each round to hitting a 1-over 72 in the third round. Fifth-year senior Noah Mullens moved up seven places on the leaderboard as he kept lowering his score in each round. Freshman Ryan Bilby rebounded from a tough first round to shoot a 2-over 73 in the second and third rounds.

Redshirt freshman Bennett Zeitner improved his score by four strokes in the third round to finish with a 2-over 73. He moved up 10 places on the leaderboard with the strong finish in his first road event of his collegiate career.

Wright State won the team competition with a 12-stroke lead over Radford. Thomas Griroux of Oakland finished atop the leaderboard by five strokes over Jones.
