Marshall defeats WVSU, falls to WKU

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Marshall Tennis (12-12) split a pair of duals, falling to Western Kentucky (18-8), 4-3, before defeating West Virginia State, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center.

"I am just really happy that Liz [Stefancic], Audrey [Grigore] and Madison [Ballow] could finish with a W," Marshall Tennis head coach John Mercer said. "They played well in their last match on their home court. It was great that Madi and Liz won both their matches today. I thought their experience showed through today when they took care of business when it was needed."

"The seniors have shown a commitment to the school and their schoolwork. It's probably going to be two doctors and a nurse from this group."

The Hilltoppers came in strong, taking the doubles point to start the first dual after winning on courts two and three. Emma Vanderheyden and Liz Stefancic were leading on court one at the time the point was clinched by the visitors, but did not finish.

Marshall stormed in front with back-to-back-to-back wins in singles as Vanderheyden tied the dual at one after winning on court one, 6-0, 6-3. Madi Ballow and Stefancic followed suit to put the Herd in front 3-1 on courts three and two, respectively. WKU would take the victory with wins on courts four and five before ultimately clinching the dual on court six.

After honoring the seniors, Ballow, Grigore, and Stefancic, prior to the second dual, the Herd jumped on West Virginia State in the doubles. Ballow and Sophia Hurrion took the win on court two with the pairing of Vanderheyden and Stefancic confirming the point following a 6-1 triumph on court one. Aisling McGrane and Gabrielle Clairotte were leading on court three, but did not finish due to the point being clinched.

Rieke Gillar carried the momentum from doubles by downing Lea Rolland, 6-1, 6-0, on court six. Stefancic and Jutte Van Hansewyck sealed the result of the dual with wins on courts two and four, respectively, within two minutes of each other. Shortly following, Ballow wrapped up her second singles win of the day defeating Maya Haidari on court three, 6-2, 6-3. Vanderheyden overcame a challenge from Gaya Solomon, 6-3, 7-5, on court one. Clairotte persevered to overcome a first set defeat taking her match in a tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0, to close out the day on court five.
