Herd Faces Southern Miss in First Round of 2022 C-USA Women’s Tennis Tournament

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University tennis team (12-12) is set to take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (13-4) in the first round of the 2022 Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournament.

Vanderheyden and her doubles partner Liz Stefancic have a 15-6 record and have won nine of their last 10 matches in top flight singles.

LAST TIME OUT
Marshall split a pair on contests on Saturday falling 4-3 to WKU and defeating West Virginia State 7-0.
The Hilltoppers came in strong, taking the doubles point to start the first dual after winning on courts two and three. Emma Vanderheyden and Liz Stefancic were leading on court one at the time the point was clinched by the visitors, but did not finish.
Marshall stormed in front with back-to-back-to-back wins in singles as Vanderheyden tied the dual at one after winning on court one, 6-0, 6-3. Madi Ballow and Stefancic followed suit to put the Herd in front 3-1 on courts three and two, respectively. WKU would take the victory with wins on courts four and five before ultimately clinching the dual on court six.
After honoring the seniors, Ballow, Grigore, and Stefancic, prior to the second dual, the Herd jumped on West Virginia State in the doubles. Ballow and Sophia Hurrion took the win on court two with the pairing of Vanderheyden and Stefancic confirming the point following a 6-1 triumph on court one. Aisling McGrane and Gabrielle Clairotte were leading on court three, but did not finish due to the point being clinched.
Rieke Gillar carried the momentum from doubles by downing Lea Rolland, 6-1, 6-0, on court six. Stefancic and Jutte Van Hansewyck sealed the result of the dual with wins on courts two and four, respectively, within two minutes of each other. Shortly following, Ballow wrapped up her second singles win of the day defeating Maya Haidari on court three, 6-2, 6-3. Vanderheyden overcame a challenge from Gaya Solomon, 6-3, 7-5, on court one. Clairotte persevered to overcome a first set defeat taking her match in a tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0, to close out the day on court five.

The Golden Eagles 13-4 this season and enters the tournament as the sixth seed.
Calara Tardivel is 10-0 in singles this season splitting time on courts three, four and five.
Ebru Zeynep Yazgan is 7-3 this spring in top flight singles.
