TEXARKANA, Ark. – Marshall men's golf junior Tyler Jones is atop the leaderboard at the end of round one of the Conference USA Championships. Jones shot a 5-under 67 on Monday at the Texarkana Country Club.
The Thundering Herd is tied for 11th overall. Tee times for round two begin at 8 a.m. CT/9 a.m. ET on the first and tenth holes. Live scoring is provided by GolfStat.com.
"Another great day for Tyler," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "He is playing great this spring. I was really happy with the team. We had four guys playing this Championship for the first time ever and they fought hard. This is a tough golf course to play and I really think they will all show improvement tomorrow. I can't wait to watch them compete tomorrow."
After a delayed start time due to rain, Jones totaled seven birdies in the first round. He began the day on the back-nine with three birdies as well as two bogeys. Jones rebounded on the front-nine with four more birdies, including three-straight from holes three through five. He finished shooting par or better on 16-of-18 holes. Jones holds a one-shot lead over Max Sturdza of Florida Atlantic.
Fifth-year senior Brad Plaziak is second on the Herd with a 4-over 76. He birdied the 12th hole. Freshman Ryan Bilby finished with four birdies and redshirt freshman Brett Montgomery had three. Fifth-year senior Noah Mullens had one birdie.
Florida Atlantic leads the team competition by three shots over Rice.
