Ballow won in doubles and singles
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Marshall University tennis team (11-10) pushed Cincinnati (15-4) to a tiebreaker, but ultimately fell, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center.
"I thought we did a great job in the doubles," Marshall head tennis coach John Mercer said. "It came down to the last couple points in the doubles. We were able to win those points and the singles came down to the same thing."
"I thought Sophia [Hurrion] did a great job to be in that situation [in the tiebreaker] after being down 4-1 in the third. Aisling [McGrane] did a great job winning her match on court four against a tough player.
We had some spots that were good today with great effort overall."
Emma Vanderheyden and Liz Stefancic put the Herd on the front foot with a 6-0 win on court one to open the doubles' portion. The Bearcats pulled even after taking the set on court three (6-4), but Madi Ballow and Hurrion battled to take the tiebreaker on court two, 7-6 [8-6 tiebreaker].
Cincinnati wrestled control of the dual with a pair of wins on courts one and five to push ahead 2-1 in the dual, but Ballow notched a win on court three (6-2, 6-4) to tie the dual at 2-2. UC pushed back in front after Idana Guna won on court two in three sets (7-5, 5-7, 6-3). McGrane evened up the dual, 3-3, after registering a victory on court four, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 over Maria Santilli. Two minutes later, Cincinnati's Kelli Niehaus sealed the dual, 4-3, after winning on court six, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 [7-5 tiebreaker].
