The Herd split a pair of home duals last weekend defeating Middle Tennessee, 6-1, and falling to Cincinnati, 4-3.
Against the Blue Raiders, Aisling McGrane and Gabrielle Clairotte were sharp from the outset as they claimed victory on court number three, 6-0. Madi Ballow and Sophia Hurrion wore down the pairing of Zani Barnard and Eloise Swarbrick on court number two, taking the set and winning the doubles' point, 6-3.
Liz Stefancic struck first during the singles portion, defeating Muskan Gupta (6-3, 6-1) on court number two, and giving the Herd a 2-0 advantage. The Blue Raiders cut into the deficit with Zani Barnard notching a win on court number four, but Emma Vanderheyden dispatched Lee Barnard (7-6, 6-3) on court number one, to restore the dual lead back to two, 3-1. Ballow confirmed Marshall's victory after prevailing on court number three (6-0, 6-7, 6-4). Clairotte added another tally from court number five after winning the final five games in the third set (5-7, 6-1, 6-4). Hurrion recorded the final point on the evening winning 6-2, 6-4 on court number six.
Then against Cincinnati, Vanderheyden and Stefancic put the Herd on the front foot with a 6-0 win on court one to open the doubles' portion. The Bearcats pulled even after taking the set on court three (6-4), but Ballow and Hurrion battled to take the tiebreaker on court two, 7-6 [8-6 tiebreaker].
Cincinnati wrestled control of the dual with a pair of wins on courts one and five to push ahead 2-1 in the dual, but Ballow notched a win on court three (6-2, 6-4) to tie the dual at 2-2. UC pushed back in front after Idana Guna won on court two in three sets (7-5, 5-7, 6-3). McGrane evened up the dual, 3-3, after registering a victory on court four, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 over Maria Santilli. Two minutes later, Cincinnati's Kelli Niehaus sealed the dual, 4-3, after winning on court six, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 [7-5 tiebreaker].
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: VCU
The Rams are 14-5 this season. VCU is coming off a 6-1 loss to the Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday.
Paola Diaz Delgado is 13-2 at number one singles this season. Delgado is 9-1 in doubles with Lauara Astudillo, all at the number two position.
