Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (20-31-1) dropped its contest to the Morehead State Eagles (24-26), 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon at the Kennedy Center.
Morehead State took the early lead, 1-0, on an Alex Jacobs fielder's choice in the top of the first. However, with two outs and an 0-1 count the next half inning, Luke Edwards launched his 12th homer of the season to the right to tie the game, 1-1. It extended the junior's on-base streak to 61 games.
Herd starting pitcher Chad Heiner settled into his outing as he struck out the side in the top of the second despite giving up a pair of walks and followed with a pair of strikeouts in the third.
MSU's Isaias Guzman hit a two-run home run off Marshall reliever Nicholas Weyrich in the top of the fourth as the home side trailed 3-1. Weyrich kept his composure and threw a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth.
The next half inning, Travis Sankovich drew a one-out walk and one batter later Edwards singled through the left side to put runners at first and second with two outs. Ryan Leitch then singled to short, and Sankovich took advantage of the throw to first to score, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Relief pitcher Carter Lyles hit the first batter of his outing, Nick Gooden, in the sixth. Gooden reached third on a couple of ground outs and scored on a wild pitch to put the Herd down 4-2.
Lyles threw a 1-2-3 top of the seventh and reliever Cole Agemy worked around a pair of base runners with a couple of strikeouts to keep the score 4-2 after the eighth. Eddie Leon recorded a scoreless ninth inning in relief of Agemy.
The Herd was unable to overcome the deficit as it stranded three runners in the final two innings of play.
Luke Edwards now has 81 hits this season, third most in a season in program history.
