DENTON, Texas – In a pitching and defensive battle, the Marshall softball team lost 1-0 in the eighth inning to the North Texas Mean Green on Friday at Lovelace Stadium.

The Thundering Herd falls to 32-15 overall and 14-8 in Conference USA. The Mean Green improve to 31-13 and 16-6 in league play. Game two is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM, with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul with Scott Hall on the call.

Redshirt junior pitcher Sydney Nester pitched the entire game, scattering seven hits and giving up just one run. She struck out seven bringing her season total to 277, fourth-best in team history.

Marshall's offense managed just five hits. Fifth-year senior Saige Pye had two to lead the way. Fifth-year senior Aly Harrell, senior Mya Stevenson and sophomore Kay Kay Kenney had one each.

The Herd's defense made great plays all night long. Stevenson tied her career-high with four putouts in right field, including a catch on the run by the line in the fifth. Fifth-year senior Armani Brown stuck with a play that hit off the glove of sophomore Autumn Owen at third, picked it up and made the throw to first to end the second. Owen also tallied three putouts and two assists.

In the third, fifth-year senior Madison Whitaker made a great catch in traffic with both Stevenson and senior Grace Chelemen all converging for a fly ball into shallow right-center. Whitaker reached the glove up and made the grab stranding two runners on base. Nester tallied her fifth strikeout of the night in the fifth to strand a runner at second.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kailey Gamble hit a double down the left field line with one away. A pinch runner came in at second and did not last long. The next batter lined a sinking shot into center that Chelemen made the catch going down to a knee. Chelemen then got up and fired back to Whitaker at second to double up the runner.

Marshall loaded the bases in the top of the seventh off a single from Pye, a hit-by-pitch for Stevenson and then a two-out infield single from Kenney. However, the Herd could not take advantage.

Marshall's defense made another stop in the bottom of the seventh as Kenney caught a fly ball in left to strand another runner on base. The Herd could not get the offense rolling in the top of the eighth. Harrell was hit by a pitch for the 52nd time in her career. She is one away from tying the program all-time plunks record held by Marcena Bertoldo (2007-10). North Texas delivered the walk-off base hit in the eighth to take game one.
