DENTON, Texas – The Marshall softball team lost game two on Saturday, 12-4, to the North Texas Mean Green at Lovelace Stadium. Game three is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
The Thundering Herd falls to 32-16 overall and 14-9 in Conference USA. The Mean Green improve to 32-13 and 17-6 in league play. Sunday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ as well as broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul.
Marshall tallied seven hits in the game and drew five walks, but struggled to find the timely hitting to drive runs in. Senior Grace Chelemen had three hits – two singles and a double – and one RBI. Fifth-year senior Madison Whitaker had two hits. Fifth-year senior Aly Harrell had one hit and drew two walks. Saturday was the 12th time this season and the 47th of her career with at least two walks. Her all-time program record is now up to 170 walks. Sophomore Autumn Owen had a hit as well.
North Texas took an early 4-0 lead through two innings. The Herd's deficit could have been higher had it not been for an incredible catch by Chelemen to end the first. With a runner at second, two away and North Texas leading 1-0, Saleen Donohoe sent a long fly ball to deep center. Chelemen raced back to the fence, leaped, and robbed Donohoe of a two-run home run. Chelemen got her glove over the fence to make the snag and bring the ball back into the park. It wasn't the only great defensive play of the day for Chelemen.
In the top of the third, senior Mya Stevenson drove in her 50th run of the season with a sacrifice fly to center that scored redshirt freshman Amaya Lee. Stevenson has reached the 50 RBI plateau for the second time in a season. She is just the third player in Marshall softball history to achieve the mark joining Rachel Folden, who did it in 2005 (60) and 2006 (56), and Shaelynn Braxton who did it in 2014 (57) and 2015 (56). Stevenson had 58 RBI as a freshman in 2019.
The Mean Green scored another run in the bottom of the third to extend the lead back to four, 5-1. The Herd responded with two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to two. Whitaker led off the inning with her second hit of the game. Sophomore Kay Kay Kenney joined Whitaker on base with a walk. A wild pitch allowed Whitaker and Kenney to advance to the next base. With one out, freshman Lauren Love came in to pinch hit. Love grounded out to second, however the play gave Whitaker the chance to score and Kenney advanced to third. With Harrell at the plate, another wild pitch sent Kenney sprinting home. Harrell ended up with her second walk of the game.
Marshall then looked as if it was carrying a little momentum as the defense shut North Texas off the scoreboard in the fourth. With one out and a runner at second, Cierra Simon hit a line drive into center that was caught by Chelemen. The senior centerfielder then fired back to Whitaker at second to double up the runner. It was the third-straight game that Chelemen started a double play.
The Herd could not keep the momentum going as North Texas scored four more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the contest by the mercy-rule.
Sophomore Brianna McCown had the start in the circle and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four hits and four runs. Junior Ashley Blessin pitched the rest of the second and all of the third. Blessin allowed two hits, one run and struck out two. Redshirt junior Cailey Joyce entered the game in the fourth and pitched into the fifth, allowing three hits and three runs. Freshman Bub Feringa pitched the final 1.2 innings for Marshall. McCown took the loss, dropping her record to 3-4.
