DENTON, Texas – Marshall softball senior Mya Stevenson belted her 58th career home run as the Thundering Herd came back for a 9-6 win over the North Texas Mean Green on Sunday at Lovelace Stadium. Stevenson ties Rachel Folden for the most home runs in Marshall softball history.
The Herd improved to 33-16 overall and 15-9 in Conference USA play to end the regular season. The Mean Green fall to 32-14 overall and 17-7 in league play. Marshall will be the No. 4 seed in the C-USA Tournament, May 11-14, hosted by North Texas. The Herd will play on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT against the winner of No. 5 Florida Atlantic and No. 8 UTSA. The first day of the tournament is single elimination. The winner advances to day two, which begins double elimination, and take on No. 1 seed Louisiana Tech.
Marshall got on the scoreboard first in the second inning. With two outs, fifth-year senior Saige Pye reached base on a dropped strike three. The wild pitch gave the Herd a base runner with Stevenson coming to the plate. The Mesquite, Texas, native – just 51 miles away from Denton – took a 2-2 pitch out beyond the wall in left-center. The two-run shot not only gave Marshall the lead, but put Stevenson into a tie with Folden for the all-time home run record.
North Texas bounced back with a two-run home run from senior Tayla Evans. The Herd got the offense rolling again, taking advantage of Mean Green mistakes with two more runs in the fourth. Freshman Lauren Love led off the inning reaching on an error. Fifth-year senior Madison Whitaker then reached on a single, followed by fifth-year senior Katie Adams drawing a walk. With the bases loaded, and no outs, freshman Bub Feringa came out to pinch hit and sent a grounder back to the circle. Skyler Savage fielded it, made the throw home to retire Love, then North Texas tried to double up Feringa at first. The throw from the catcher hit Feringa in the helmet and rolled toward second, allowing Whitaker to score and Adams to reach third. With fifth-year senior Aly Harrell at the plate, a wild pitch sent Adams home, giving the Herd a 4-2 lead.
The Mean Green scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth taking a one-run advantage, 5-4, into the sixth inning. Senior Grace Chelemen caught a sinking line drive in right-center for the final out in the bottom of the sixth, keeping the game at a one-run deficit into the seventh.
Fifth-year senior Armani Brown led off the seventh with a bunt-single that was dropped perfectly in front of the left-handed batters box. Harrell then legged out an infield single and redshirt freshman Amaya Lee came in to run for Harrell at first. Chelemen executed a sacrifice bunt that moved Brown to third and Lee to second. Pye drove home Brown with a base hit to right that tied the game at 5-5. Freshman Rielly Lucas entered to run for Pye at first.
Stevenson kept the onslaught rolling with a double to right-center that scored Lee giving Marshall the lead, 6-5. Sophomore Autumn Owen drew a walk that loaded the bases again. Love came to the plate and ripped a shot to the right-center gap for a double scoring Lucas and Stevenson. Two batters later, Adams plated Owen with a single up the middle. Marshall put up five runs in the top of the seventh off six hits and one walk, and took a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the frame.
North Texas managed to score one run in the bottom of the seventh, however the final two batters flew out to sophomore Kay Kay Kenney, a native of Highland Village, Texas – under 20 miles away from Denton – in left to end the game, stranding a runner at second.
Redshirt junior Sydney Nester went the distance in the circle for the Herd. She allowed ten hits and six runs while striking out seven. Nester ended two innings with a strikeout and received great defensive play behind her to finish off innings to strand runners on base. She earned her 24th win of the season and has 284 strikeouts heading into the C-USA Tournament.
Marshall recorded nine hits. Pye and Stevenson had two hits each. Chelemen, Love, Whitaker, Adams and Brown had one hit each. Stevenson led the team with three RBI bringing her season total to 53. Love had two RBI. Pye had one RBI and now has 48 this season.
Stevenson tied the all-time program home run record in her 168th career game. She reached number 58 in 54 fewer games than Folden. Folden hit her 58th and final home run in her 222nd career game on April 26, 2008, off Jordan Kinnard of Tulsa. Marshall won 3-1. Stevenson joined Folden at the top on Sunday off Skylar Savage. Stevenson's first career home run came against Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 15, 2019, off Mollie Paulick as the Herd won 5-2. She hit number 50 on March 25 of this season against Middle Tennessee to join Folden as the only members of the Herd 50 Home Run Club.
Stevenson also moved ahead of Harrell into third place all-time in career RBI with 167. She is four away from tying Shaelynn Braxton (2013-15, '17) for second place in team history.
