Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Marshall University volleyball team (6-5) completed a weekend sweep in the Palmetto State as it took down the USC Upstate Spartans (2-10), 3-0, (25-13, 25-22, 25-14) in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Saturday afternoon.
"I am so proud of our entire team and staff for sweeping the last weekend of our preseason matches," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said after the weekend sweep. "We're hopefully getting into the comfort level to begin Sun Belt play next weekend. Having Macy (McElhaney) and Jazz (Parrish) showcase what we see every day in practice was special for all of us. We've relied heavily on Macy and she hadn't been putting up the numbers we've known she's capable of, and this weekend she proved us all right. We have a lot of work to do to get ready for ODU and clean up our errors. However, this team stuck together and executed seamlessly. I couldn't be prouder to be part of this program."
Graduate student Macy McElhaney put up a match-high 15 kills on 25 attacks with only three errors for a .480 hitting percentage in the sweep.
Sophomore Brynn Brown recorded a match-high 36 assists on 70 set attempts and had eight kills on 10 attacks.
Fifth-year senior Kaitlyn Gehler collected a match-high 16 digs, as junior Jazminn Parrish followed with 14. Parrish also had nine kills on 20 attacks.
The score was tied twice early in the first set, but a quick 4-0 rally, led with kills by Macy McElhaney and redshirt junior Olivia Fogo with two Spartan attacking errors, put the Herd up 6-2. Marshall then scored 13 of the next 19 points with a McElhaney kill giving MU a 19-9 advantage. A pair of Upstate attacking errors ended the opening stanza as the Herd took it 25-13. Marshall accumulated a .481 hitting percentage, concerting 14 of its 27 attacks and committing just one error.
The two sides traded points until the scoreboard read 12-12 in the middle of the second set. A 4-0 rally ended by an Upstate attacking error saw the Herd grab a 16-12 advantage. Marshall held onto the lead the rest of set as senior Essence Clerkley collected a pair of kills in the final three points of the frame to have the visitors take it 25-22. Marshall had a .469 hitting percentage in the set.
The Herd never trailed in the third and eventual final set. Much like the first, the score was tied twice early before MU jumped ahead. Its largest lead of frame at 24-13, came after a pair of Spartan attacking errors as an Upstate service sealed the match for the Herd. Macy McElhaney had five of her 15 kills in the final set. Marshall put up another hitting percentage over .400 in the final set at .444 with 15 kills on 27 attacks and only three errors.
