Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (7-9, 1-3 Sun Belt) swept the Georgia State Panthers (5-11, 1-3 Sun Belt), 3-0, (25-20, 25-23, 25-16) in its final match of the week on Friday in the Cam Henderson Center.
Â
"Last night we tried to just lean on Macy (McElahney) and we tend to do that. We find one hitter we try to go after and put a lot of pressure on them," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said. "Before the chat, we today we told Macy 'focus on you and let's go with defense today.' I think because of that it gave everyone some freedom. She was outstanding defensively today. You lose a couple of games, you lose some confidence and I think the comeback was unbelievable."
Â
Junior Regan Tinkle led the way with a match-high 11 kills on 22 attacks with just three errors for a .364 hitting percentage.
Â
Sophomore Brynn Brown collected 21 assists on 36 sets in the contest as graduate student Kayla Malec blocked four Georgia State attacks.
Â
Graduate student Macy McElhaney recorded a match-high 13 digs as fifth-year senior Kaitlyn Gehler followed with 11.
Â
With the score tied 4-4 in the opening set, the Herd took a 7-4 lead off a kill by Tinkle along with a kill and service ace by freshman Bella Thompson. Marshall then jumped out to its largest lead, 16-10, with an another Tinkle kill and a kill by redshirt junior Olivia Fogo. Despite the Panthers coming back to tie the set 18-18, MU didn't falter as it took seven of the final nine points in the frame with Tinkle's fourth kill of the set ending it 25-20. The Herd did not trail in the set.
Â
The Herd trailed 9-7 in the middle of the second set. However, a pair of kills by Montague and a Macy McElhaney service ace put the home side on top 10-9, as it didn't trail the rest of the way. MU held a 19-13 advantage, but Georgia State rallied back to pull within one, 24-23, although a Panther attacking error secured the set for the Herd, 25-23.
Â
MU took the third set wire-to-wire. It quickly jumped out to a 6-1 lead before Georgia State called a timeout. Marshall took advantage of nine Panther errors in the set as it cruised to a 25-16 victory in the final frame to seal a sweep. Fogo captured the final point of the match on a kill.
