Marshall Softball Rolls in Chattanooga Challenge Opener

Sydney Nestor throws complete-game in Herd’s 16-0 victory
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Marshall softball team (4-1) opened its second weekend of competition with a 16-0 five-inning win over Maine.
Ten different Marshall players pounded out 13 hits while pitcher Sydney Nester threw a one-hit complete game shutout.Â
The senior is now 4-0 with four complete games, having allowed just five earned runs while striking out 33.Â
Freshman Abby Darnley and redshirt-freshman Brooklyn Ulrich each earned their first-career collegiate hits. Both drove in two runs in an eight-run 5th inning.Â
"I am excited about how we started off the weekend and we were solid in every aspect," Marshall head coach Megan Smith Lyon said. "We showed a lot of toughness and grit and it was a complete team win."
The Herd, who made a habit out of the big inning in Florida last week, made its move with a four-run rally in the 3rd.Â
Alex Coleman led off the 3rd with a walk, before scoring on an Autumn Owen base hit. Owen would score on a wild pitch after Grace Chelemen's sacrifice fly. Sydney Bickel's bases loaded walk capped off the inning full of quality at-bats.Â
The Herd was a perfect 7-7 in stolen base attempts. Marshall played a clean game defensively, giving up no errors on a cold afternoon in Tennessee.
UP NEXT
The Herd plays two from Warner Park on Saturday. Marshall faces Indiana State at 12:30 p.m. before facing the hosts, Chattanooga at 3:00 p.m.
