Herd Softball Preps For Season Opener Friday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall softball team opens the 2023 season with a contest against the Portland State Vikings. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m. from Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex on Friday in Leesburg, Fla.

PREGAME NOTES

Marshall was picked to finish sixth in the Sun Belt Preseason Poll.
Fifth-year senior Sydney Nester returns as the reigning C-USA Pitcher and Newcomer of the year. Nester won 26 games in 2022, with a 2.36 ERA
The Herd returns 10 players with eight newcomers to the roster in 2023.

Portland State is coming off a 28-18 season, its winningest campaign since 2011.
The Vikings were picked to finish third in the Big Sky Preseason Poll
PSU is led by seventh-year head coach Meadow McWhorter, who is four wins away from 100 for her career.
Portland State features two first team all-conference selections, including the battery mate of pitcher, Olivia Grey and catcher, Paetynn Lopez.
MUSB has met the Vikings once before, with the Herd winning 7-4 on Feb. 10, 2019.

After Friday's game, Marshall will play two on Saturday against Butler and Colgate at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively. The Herd will then finish the weekend against the Bulldogs Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
