Addkison Deals in Marshall Baseball’s First SBC Win over App State

Addkison threw four hitless innings to start game

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall baseball (9-8, 1-2 Sun Belt) won its first Sun Belt Conference game on Sunday 7-5 in the series finale over the App State Mountaineers (10-8, 2-1 Sun Belt) in Charleston, West Virginia, at GoMart Ballpark.
"Zac (Addkison) set the tempo for the day. They've been tough offensively all weekend. Zac went four hitless and six innings strong. He put our team in a good spot," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said about Zac Addkison's start. "I love the fight our guys showed offensively. They kept battling and battling. We had a game plan and we executed it."
Starting pitcher Zac Addkison earned his first win of the season going 6.0 innings giving up just three runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The junior right-handed pitcher opened his outing with four hitless innings.
The Herd opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Owen Ayers doubled down the right-field line with two outs. After Gio Ferraro drew a walk, Calin Smith singled to left for the first run of the game, the first of three two-out Marshall runs.
Then in the bottom of the third, Luke Edwards led off with a single and one batter later Ayers blasted a homer to right to give MU a 3-0 advantage. Smith stepped to the plate one batter later and hit a two-out homer to extend it to 4-0.
The Herd added a run in each of the fifth, sixth and eighth innings on a Ferraro single to go with a sacrifice fly and RBI single by Edwards.
Closer Ryan Capuano earned his fourth save of the season throwing 2.1 innings giving up just one run on one hit and three walks.
Edwards concluded the series with a 3-for-4 performance scoring two runs and brining home another pair. Ayers also went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
"We have a mid-week game (at Cincinnati) to stay sharp and hopefully continue these winning ways. Again, it's another opportunity on Tuesday for these guys to learn how we're going to play together and how we can win together. Then the first Sun Belt road series this weekend against a good Old Dominion team," Beals said about the week ahead.
UP NEXT
The Herd has four games this week starting with a mid-week game Tuesday at Cincinnati at 5 p.m. with a weekend series at Old Dominion beginning Friday.
