Herd Baseball Captures First SBC Series at ULM

MONROE, La. – The Marshall University baseball team (13-12, 4-5 Sun Belt) took its first Sun Belt Conference series with a 4-3 win in Monroe, Louisiana, on Sunday over the ULM Warhawks (10-19, 1-8 Sun Belt). Daniel Carinci recorded three RBI in the contest.

"I am very happy for our guys," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the series win. "We fought hard, competing to the end, and that is what it takes to win a road series in this conference. Zac (Addkison) pitched extremely well and we got some big hits highlighted by Carinci's two-run homer. Looking forward to coming back home to play this week."

Starting pitcher Zac Addkison paced the Herd on the bump earning his second win of the season. The San Antonio, Texas, native threw a career-high 7.0 innings while striking out a season-high nine Warhawks. The junior gave up just one run on four hits and two walks. Addkison struck out the side in the second and stranded a pair in scoring position to end the fifth.

Down by one in the top of the seventh, Amari Bartee recorded an infield single to second to bring up Carinci. Carinci was down 1-2 in the count and sent the fourth pitch offering of his at-bat over the left-field fence to give Marshall a 2-1 advantage.

Then with two outs in top of the ninth, Carinci reached on an error as Owen Ayers crossed home to make it 3-1. After a Calin Smith single placed Carinci at third, Kebler singled through the right side to plate Carinci and make it 4-1 with what was the eventual game-winning run.

ULM tallied two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Drew Harlow recorded his first save by getting the final out of the contest.

Luke Edwards and Carinci each collected a pair of hits in the contest.

Marshall is set to host the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at GoMart Ballpark.
