Marshall women’s soccer off to first 2-0 start since 2011
HUNTINGTON, W.Va – Marshall sophomore Bailey Fisher stepped up to take a free kick just outside the box in the early moments of the second half Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
Having already scored in the team's opener at Morehead State, the sophomore from Hurricane, West Virginia fired a confident strike past the High Point University goalkeeper to give Marshall's women's soccer team (2-0) the decisive 1-0 lead.
The free kick was a result of a red card by a Panthers' (0-1-1) defender denying the Herd's Makai Laguines a clear goal scoring opportunity.
The goal proved to be enough for Marshall, who is 2-0 for the first time since the 2011 season.
"Our reaction at the start of the second half was absolutely exceptional," Marshall Head Coach Michael Swan said. "Chasing the last balls, Makai putting the defender in a situation where she is never going to win, and the finish by Bailey, a player who is a match-winner right now, I could not be happier for them."
Swan earned his 150th career victory as a head coach with the win.
Defensively, goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth pitched her second shutout in as many games for Coach Swan's side. The sophomore made six saves to follow her eight saves made in the team's opener.
"She's huge, she is a game-changer," Coach Swan said. "She is making us all better, she has a fantastic relationship with the other goalkeepers and she is making them better. Alexis is getting the headlines but it is all about that core group of players training together every day."
The 2-0 Herd travels to Indiana State Thursday for a 6:00 p.m. kick against the Sycamores.
