Marshall faces Ohio next Thursday in Huntington
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – In a match delayed nearly three full hours from its originally scheduled time due to an excessive heat index, the Marshall women's soccer team (2-0-1) fought for a 1-1 road draw at Indiana State (0-0-3).
Abi Hugh's laser goal in the 55th minute leveled the scoring for Coach Michael Swan's side, who remains undefeated after three matches. It was the first goal ISU's Maddie Alexander had allowed after holding Louisville and Miami (Ohio) goalless.
"We've got to give so much credit to our players tonight," Coach Swan said. "Such tough conditions for both sets of players but our performance and desire to get back in the game was impressive."
"We got smarter as the game went on and really had some fantastic chances and some moments when we got unlucky in front of goal."
The Hugh goal was beckoning for the Herd after persistent pressure opened the second half. Following a Sycamores' goal in the later stages of the opening half, MU turned on the pressure, outshooting the hosts 9-2 in the second half. All of Marshall's goals have come in the second half this season.
The match featured an unconventional two water breaks in each half. The heat index in Terre Haute reached as high as 112 degrees fahrenheit on Thursday.
After a week off, the Herd women's soccer team will start a five-match homestand with the Ohio Bobcats on Thursday, August 31. Kickoff from Hoops Family Field will be at 6:00 p.m.
